The PSU ASPRS Student Chapter has extended the deadline for GIS in Action Conference Scholarships to Friday, March 12, 2010!  The scholarship covers the $30 conference registration fee to attend the 2010 GIS in Action Conference to be held on PSU's campus on April 14 and 15.

We have enough funds available to grant 20 scholarships.  The GIS in Action Conference is a fantastic opportunity to learn about cutting edge GIS and Remote Sensing software, methods and applications and to meet and network with GIS professionals from throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Kenai Fjords National Park is looking for a student interested in working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other spatial data. The person selected will support park operations by making maps, collecting field data, documenting existing GIS data, and managing and organizing spatial data.

This is a Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) position which provides an opportunity to gain experience working for the government in a job related to your field of study. We are looking for an enthusiastic and qualified undergraduate or Masters Degree student in the field of Geography, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, Information Management, or similar field. This is an employment opportunity anticipated to last through summer 2010.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District is informally recruiting for a student intern position in GIS and Mapping.  This position will be for approximately 1 year.  Job duties are variable and consist of general geospatial data management and GIS analysis support related to water resource engineering.  Interested applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited university geography or related program in the physical sciences
and have basic GIS skills (at least GIS 1 and 2 or equivalent).  Pay depends on educational background with undergraduate students generally qualified at the GS-4 level ($14.14/hr) and graduate students generally qualified at the GS-5 level ($15.82), interns do not receive federal health or other benefits.

We would like to see a time commitment of around 20 hours per week during the school year and can support a full-time schedule during Summer term.  This time commitment may be flexible.

GPS Data Collection and GIS Mapping Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is for a part-time Mapping Specialist that will work independently with minimal supervision to research, plan, collect, interpret and print scaled maps for a variety of environmental projects, such as Sustainable Neighborhoods, Wetland and Stream Boundaries, Habitat and Species studies, Natural Resources, Mitigation Plans, Environmental Site Assessments, Soil, Groundwater and Soil Vapor Investigations, and
Remediation.

This position will prepare, layer, and scale maps and figures such as: Vicinity, Parcel, Plot, Aerial Photograph, Sample Location, Topographic, National Wetlands Inventory, Soil Survey, Flood Plain, Local Wetlands Inventory, Wetland and Stream Survey, Water Type, Priority Habitat and Species, and Lidar.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Strong GIS skills with the ESRI suite of software (ArcInfo, ArcGIS 9.3, ArcView,ArcMap), AutoCAD, Google Earth, Trimble and Delorme devices

Proficient with Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)

Use GPS to collect environmental data and navigate in the field

Good information technology (IT) technical skills

A basic understanding behind data management and relationship databases

Maintains and updates the existing GIS library and data sets

Strong understanding and import of raster and vector data collection and
conversion

Experience in working with a variety of coordinate systems and performing
transformations from variable datasets

Skilled in geo-referencing images into various GIS platforms

Advanced computer cartography and scale conversions

Exceptional technical editing and writing ability

Work and import shapefiles, professional land surveys and .pdf conversions

Proven ability to organize large amounts of data and present in easily
understandable format

Strong mathematical, statistical and analytical proficiency

Ability to create, edit, display and analyze environmental data

Analyze data to determine validity, quality, and scientific significance, and to interpret correlations between human activities and environmental effects

Prepare charts or graphs from data samples and provide summary information on the environmental relevance of the data

SOCIAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Comfortable with a fast-paced office and rapidly changing environment

Self motivated and independent worker and able to finish a job with minimal
oversight within given timeframe and budget
