Registration is now open for the 2011 Portland Cartography Symposium Nov. 4 at Portland State University! We have a full lineup of outstanding presenters and anticipate a vibrant and innovative gallery of map displays. The 10th annual URBAN ECOLOGY & CONSERVATION SYMPOSIUM hosted by the Urban Ecosystems Research Consortium is coming up on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Portland State University in the Smith Center Ballroom Events include a series of oral presentations, a poster session, two keynote speakers, raffles, and a post-symposium social. Abstracts for oral presentations and posters are due on NOVEMBER 30, 2012. See www.uercportland.org for details. The early registration deadline is FEBRUARY 3, 2012. On-line registration standard rate: $35; student rate: $15; volunteer rate: $5; fee includes lunch for those who pay by February 3, 2012. This event is an informal opportunity for people who are interested in the topics of GIS, photogrammetry, and remote sensing to learn more about what's going on in our own region in resource management, government, academia, and business. The information exchange is a day-long event in which local practitioners may present a 20-minute talk on one of their current or recent projects. This is also an opportunity to learn new techniques, meet new contacts, and refresh old ones. Projectors and wireless internet connection will be available. Presenters are asked to their keep presentations under 20 minutes to allow for questions and timely proceedings. Speaker slots will be limited due to the single-day schedule, so get your requests in early to insure your slot. Abstracts are due September 30th, 2011. In addition to the visual presentations, each speaker will submit a 1-page description of the project and a 1-page profile of their organization (forms are on pages 3 and 4). The 1-page write-ups must be submitted by registration deadline so they can be compiled into a notebook for distribution at the meeting. Lunch and the notebook will be included in the registration fee. WHO: ASPRS Members and Non-Members interested in expanding their knowledge. Anyone interested in learning more about GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and related fields or who wish to share information about interesting or unusual projects in these areas are welcome. Please, extend this invitation to your colleagues who work in the areas of GIS, photogrammetry, and remote sensing. No commercial presentations or endorsements are allowed. We particularly want to encourage non-members to come find out more about ASPRS. As an encouragement, student attendees who wish to join ASPRS the day of the session will have the registration fee waived. The AAG has received funding from the National Science Foundation to defray the expenses of participation by U.S. scientists in the International Geographical Union Regional Conference in Santiago, Chile to be held from November 14-18, 2011. The program will provide approximately twenty-five travel grants for this meeting: thirteen grants of $1,500 each junior scholars, including graduate students, and twelve awards of $1,000 each to senior scholars. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Details regarding the conference are available at www.ugi2011.cl. Applicants should note that the deadline for submitting abstracts for papers and posters for IGU is March 10, 2011. Applications for IGU Travel Grants are due by June 1, 2011. All volunteers will have their registration to the conference paid! We are looking for student volunteers to help at GIS-in-Action. The dates are Tuesday and Wednesday March 29th and 30th, with volunteer opportunities on evening of March 28th as well. The is a local GIS conference held here at PSU and a great opportunity to meet employers, network, and attend sessions on GIS applications. We need volunteers to work each track of the conference (including workshops and lunch) as well as to help vendors set-up on Monday night (Mar. 28th). The amount of time to work depends on the number of volunteers we get. If you are interested, please look at the Volunteer GIS-in-Action flier (attached as a word doc) and email the requested information to Nadia Jones at sittara@pdx.edu.
