            An e-Learning Framework for Using Geospatial Open Data, Open Source and Open Standards) project is ready at http://elogeo.nottingham.ac.uk/xmlui ELOGeo is a JISC-funded project based at the Centre for Geospatial Science, the University of Nottingham in partnership with the Mimas Centre of Excellence at the University of Manchester. ELOGeo main collaborators are Open Source Geospatial Foundation, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Ordnance Survey, Open Nottingham, International Cartographic Association (ICA) and gvSIG Association.

            Over the next few months we will be adding many course materials and other resources to the repository for the benefit of the wider community. The learning material preparation guidelines are available at the ELOGeo site.

            The ICA Commission on Open Source Geospatial Technologies strongly supports ELOGeo initiative as part of its education and training agenda and we welcome contributions from all interested for this. We look forward for your support and active participation for this initiative.

            Penn State offers excellent online courses and now has a program through the Open Educational Initiative (http://open.ems.psu.edu/) where you can access the online course material for free, but you do not get any instructor feedback/interaction or support or academic credit if you don't purchase the course, but can read through all the material.

            Webinars on Model Builder (free) hosted by Society for Conservation GIS 04/13/2011

            ModelBuilder Introduction at 12 pm Eastern Time on Monday, April 18.

            This session will cover Geoprocessing and ModelBuilder basics. The course will start with Geoprocessing because understanding ESRI’s geoprocessing framework is important to effectively creating models, and will then move into the procedures for constructing processes in ModelBuilder. Time permitting; the presenter will demonstrate creating a simple model.
            ModelBuilder Parameters and Variables at 12 pm Eastern Time on Monday, May 16.

            This session will cover more advanced ModelBuilder functions including iteration, building process models, and using Python scripts in a model.             AAG Community College Travel Grants

            Support from this grant program is awarded to outstanding students from community colleges, junior colleges, city colleges, or similar two-year educational institutions to attend the next AAG Annual Meeting. These travel funds are generously provided by Darrel Hess and Robert and Bobbé Christopherson. The award consists of meeting registration, one year membership in the AAG, and a travel expense subsidy of $500 to be used to defray the costs of attending the AAG Annual Meeting.             Groundwater 101 - Free class offering 10/14/2010

            If you our someone you know is interested in groundwater, please join the Portland Water Bureau and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council on Saturday, November 13 for Groundwater 101 - a FREE educational workshop that will explore the mysteries and intricacies of Portland's groundwater system. Groundwater 101 will teach you groundwater basics including local geology, hydrogeology, what role groundwater plays in our drinking water system and how to protect this important resource.

            The workshop includes classroom time, a tour of a production and monitoring well, and hands-on activities. Space is limited. Call or register on-line to reserve your spot.

            This class is open to the public. Registration is required.

            GIS Certificate Program @ PCC 07/06/2010

            Portland Community College will begin offering a GIS Certificate Program this upcoming Fall quarter, 2010.  The program is a one-year program that requires 44 credits in Geography, GIS, and the natural sciences.  More information can be found on the PCC website (http://www.pcc.edu/programs/geography/gis.html).

            In the fall the Geo 267 class will be working with Sylvania's Habitat team on the Sylvania Park restoration project and mapping out the vegetation in the park and its change over time.

            URISA – the Association for GIS Professionals and the King County GIS Center are partnering to bring five URISA certified classes to Seattle May 3-7. Each daylong workshop costs only $150 with workbook.

            Here is what you will learn in the Open Source GIS Software workshop on May 3:

            Overview Free and open source software (FOSS) has been offering choices to computer users for a number of years. Over the past few years the open source choices in GIS have been broader and more capable than ever before. This workshop will focus on GIS open source software. It will give an overview of current developments from technical and management perspectives. Selected packages and their applications in various projects will be demonstrated and discussed.

            Audience Anyone interested in free and open source geographic information system software. The workshop will suit both managerial and technical needs and it does not require any prerequisites.
