River-in-Focus Brownbag: Reclaiming the Willamette: Designing A River City
Portland’s frequently called the “City of Roses,” but only sometimes “River City”—which is interesting, given our location at the confluence of the 13th and 3rd largest rivers in the continental U.S., and that there’s a “port” embedded in our name. Just what is our relationship with the river that runs through us? Is it something we embrace—or merely cope with by building bridges to cross it and sea-walls to keep it out?
A focal point of the Central City 2035 Plan – the update of the 1988 Central City Plan – will be the most urban portion of the Willamette River, the segment roughly bounded by the Broadway Bridge and Ross Island. Troy Doss, Sallie Edmunds and Mark Raggett from the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability take a look at how Portland and the Willamette fit together, examining the river threads in our historic fabric, offering observations on other cities and their rivers, and calling out opportunities for shaping a new river relationship over the next 20 years.
