Advertiser: James Cook University Location: Work from home or at JCU campus, Cairns, QueenslandWe are seeking volunteers to assist us with road mapping efforts in Northern Sumatra, where encroaching development and some major infrastructure works are posing new threats to the Leuser Ecosystem. You can do this from home with a computer and internet connection, or join us in person at James Cook University in Cairns. It would be excellent experience for Spatial Science students, or conservationists wanting to have an impact in a research project that will deliver important planning models and tools to assist decision-makers in this region. Background We are currently living in the most explosive era of infrastructure expansion in human history. By 2050, it is projected that there will be an additional 25 million kilometres of paved roads on Earth-enough to encircle the planet more than 600 times. Around nine-tenths of these road will be built in developing nations and tropical regions which sustain many of the planet’s most biologically diverse and environmentally important ecosystems. Unfortunately, the contemporary avalanche of new infrastructure is having severe impacts on many ecosystems and species. Roads that penetrate into wilderness areas, for example, often have profound and proliferating environmental effects—such as promoting habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, illegal mining, and wildfires. However, not all infrastructure is ‘bad’ for the environment. In appropriate contexts, new infrastructure can yield sizeable social and economic benefits with only limited environmental costs. Our project Our project is titled: Limiting Environmental Impacts While Optimizing Benefits of Rapid Road Expansion in the Asia-Pacific Region. The project is led by Professor William F Laurance, James Cook University, Cairns. How you can help Join an exciting team of JCU researchers in mapping all roads in the Asia-Pacific region to direct future development towards sustainable outcomes. We are seeking volunteers to assist us in digitising (tracing) road infrastructure in Google Earth, either from home with a computer and internet connection, or in person at JCU Cairns Campus. To register your interest or request further information, contact: Jaime Huther, email: Jaime.huther@jcu.edu.au (phone: 07 4232 1427). http://agency.governmentjobs.com/dnr/default.cfm?action=viewJob&jobID=1627086
