POSITION PROFILE:
The Natural Heritage GIS Analyst / Data Specialist is the steward of the state's most comprehensive database on ecosystems and rare plant species; these data are critical to a wide range of conservation efforts in Washington. Three primary functions of this position are (1) on-going maintenance of the database and the program's overall information management system, (2) working with the scientists in the program, and with external collaborators, to identify and apply analytical tools to inform conservation planning and decision-making, and (3) making the data/information accessible to others, including federal and state agencies, consulting firms, county planners, environmental organizations, educators, researchers, and the public. The Natural Heritage GIS Analyst / Data Specialist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating acquisition and incorporation of new data from a variety of internal and external sources, developing new information products, and making those products available to our partners and clients. Our primary information management system is BIOTICS, a database developed by NatureServe (a network of more than 80 individual natural heritage programs throughout the western hemisphere). BIOTICS uses a web-based interface for data entry and mapping and is built on ArcGIS and Oracle. The person in this position interacts with information technology specialists with NatureServe and other natural heritage programs to efficiently share data and to identify solutions to shared data management, analysis, and distribution challenges. We also have access to and use the considerable GIS resources available within the Department of Natural Resources. The Natural Heritage GIS Analyst / Data Specialist also manages the NHP's web presence and supports other information management needs of the Natural Heritage Program. The Oregon Health Authority’s Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention (ACDP) section is recruiting a GIS intern to assist with project development. This is currently an unpaid volunteer internship. The duration of the internship will be 200 hours. Duties and Responsibilities: The GIS Intern, under supervision of ACDP and Oregon Tracking staff, will collect and process public water service area boundary data and assist with the construction of an ArcGIS Online site for data storage, viewing and editing. Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition (ENLC) is currently seeking a route inventory technician for our upcoming 2016 field season. Located in Ely, Nevada, ENLC is a non-profit conservation organization comprised of public, private, and non-profit partners dedicated to the restoration of Western ecosystems through collaborative teamwork. ENLC conducts a variety of vegetation, wildlife, and travel management monitoring projects throughout Nevada and surrounding states and is requesting applications for one (1) route inventory technician. One technician will be selected to work in the newly (2015) established Basin and Range Monument, located in the Ely BLM District. ROUTE INVENTORY TECHNICIAN MONITORING DUTIES: Technician will work on a two person crew mapping all of the roads and two track trails within in the boundaries of the Basin and Range Monument. The crew will use a pickup truck and ATVs to conduct the route inventory. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Applicants should either be currently enrolled in or graduated from a program in natural resources, recreation, GIS, or a related field. The ideal applicant will have experience in the use of ATVs, Tremble GIS units, and be very comfortable working in remote areas. Applicants should be able to operate an ATV for several hours at a time and be comfortable with camping in the backcountry for several days at a time in sometimes harsh weather conditions. Preferred applicants will be experienced with ATVs, 4WD vehicles, pulling a trailer, GPS navigation, and have had a clean driving record for the past 3 years. SALARY: $15/hour (plus $34/day per diem when camping) SCHEDULE: Technician should be available to begin in early May and continue through September or until the work is complete, whichever comes first. Work will occur with an 8-days-on/6-days-off schedule (10-hour days).
