The group is responsible for maintaining Sound Transit’s GIS data and supporting GIS users throughout the Agency. Additionally, the GIS group supports several of the Agency’s programs, including the Trip Planner, the Interactive Project Map and the collection and audit of Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes (MVET). Essential Functions:This position will focus on work with Open Street Map (OSM) data, as well as provide general GIS support for a variety of projects. OSM work: Sound Transit is preparing to implement a new multi-modal trip planner which uses data from the Open Street Map (OSM) to plan transit trips. OSM is an open source map, and relies on the user community for data. Much of the work performed will be related to adding missing bicycle and pedestrian facilities to OSM, as well as editing street network data and improving its quality. Most of the work on OSM will be conducted in an office, at a computer. However, some site visits may be required when more information is required for the editing process. GIS Support: This work could include data creation, mapping and data analysis for a variety of internal customers and projects. Work will be directed by the GIS Administrator. The amount of time devoted to GIS support depends on the status of the OSM project and the overall workload of the GIS group. This work will usually be completed using ArcGIS. As an intern, you will gain the unique opportunity to help prepare for a new Trip Planner that will directly benefit commuters throughout the Puget Sound region. Bicycle commutes and commutes that mix bicycles with transit trips will be fully supported. The new Trip Planner will only be as good as the data that fuels it, and this is an excellent opportunity for an individual to help the project succeed. Additionally, you will gain practical work experience though a variety of GIS projects. Summary of Position • Edit Open Street Map (OSM) data to add missing bicycle and pedestrian facilities. • Edit Open Street Map the street network to correct errors, add missing features and in general, make map features better match actual geography. • General GIS support work on a variety of GIS projects. • Occasional assistance with GIS review of taxation transactions.
