You are invited to participate in the eighth annual symposium hosted by the Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium (UERC).  During the symposium, you will have opportunities to network, build partnerships and exchange information with others concerned about urban environmental issues and the practical application of related ecological and social sciences in the Portland, Ore./Vancouver, Wash. metropolitan region.  The day will be packed with a series of presentations, a poster session, two keynote speakers, raffles, and plenty of time to visit with colleagues.  Join us for a day of sharing,learning and inspiration.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:  The symposium will provide a unique opportunity for people to share information about environmentally-focused research,
projects and programs.  Relevant fields include the biological, chemical
and physical sciences, land use planning, habitat management and
restoration, environmental education and the social sciences.  Abstracts
should focus on sharing results, lessons learned, or information about
opportunities and resources that may be of interest to those working to
advance and apply the sciences related to ecological issues in the greater
Portland/Vancouver region.  Abstracts for presentations, posters, or simply to publish in the proceedings will be accepted through MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2,2009 (EXTENDED).  Please see the UERC web site at  www.uercportland.org for details and the on-line submittal form.

WHAT IS THE UERC?  The UERC is a consortium of people from various
educational institutions, state and federal agencies, local governments,
non-profit organizations and businesses, as well as independent
professionals and students, interested in supporting urban ecosystem
research and creating an information-sharing network of people that collect and use ecological data in the Portland, Ore./Vancouver, Wash. region.  For more information and proceedings from past symposia, please visit the UERC web site.

Box 751, Portland, Oregon 97207-0751.  EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  January 8, 2010.

Registration fees*:  $30 Standard rate, $15 Student rate (proof of student status is required with payment).  Fees include lunch for those who register and pay by the early registration deadline.  Registration payment will be accepted by mail through January 18th; registrations will also be accepted at the door as space allows.  To keep the event costs low, no refunds will be given.

*A limited number of fee waivers are being offered, in exchange for
volunteer service, to anyone in financial need.  Fee waiver requests must
be made on your completed registration form by January 8, 2010 in order tobe considered.

We are happy to promote the Spring 2010 PCC Study Abroad Program to London, England.  The program dates are  March 25th to June 4th, 2010. 

The deadline to submit application will be Friday, January 8th, 2010.

The OIEC (Portland Community College, Central Oregon Community College, Chemeketa Community College, Clackamas Community College, Mt. Hood Community College and Rogue Community College) offers this unique program to enable students to study abroad while making normal progress toward their degree objectives, earning 12-15 transferable credits in courses taught by community college faculty and local guest lecturers.  This program is offered in conjunction with other community colleges in partnership with the American Institute of Foreign Study (AIFS), which provides transportation, living accommodations, and a wide range of student and instructional support services, including an optional pre-program tour of Europe.  Credits earned will appear on transcripts from these fully accredited community colleges.

US EPA Chicago office hiring 2 GIS interns + 18 other environmental interns

This is an announcement for student internships at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Chicago. There are a total of 20 part-time, paid internship positions that will begin in November 2009 and run through May 2010. Interested students are encouraged to apply for any and all positions where they are qualified.

Of the twenty, we are seeking interns for 2 GIS positions. If you have GIS mapping experience (esp. with ESRI ArcGIS software), please apply for the Environmental Protection Specialist and Computer Clerk positions.

All positions will be posted on the USAJOBS.gov website starting next Wednesday, October 28th and the deadline to apply is Friday, October 30th. Before then, applicants can create and save their resumes to the USAJobs website.

Ecotrust works with native peoples and in the fisheries, forestry and farming sectors to build a regional economy that is based on social and ecological opportunities.

Reports to: Marine Planning Project Manager
Location: All ports in the Oregon Coast
Start Date: Mid-November 2009
Salary: $2,500/month

We are currently looking to hire 2 field staff members to conduct interviews with commercial, charter, and sport fishermen on the Oregon coast. This work is in support of the Marine Fisheries Uses and Values project. This project is a unique opportunity to bring fishermen's knowledge directly to bear on marine planning processes... The goal is to compile a comprehensive map of the commercial and recreational fishing use patterns along the Oregon coast from Brookings to Astoria using the expert knowledge of fishermen...

After introductory meetings have been conducted with representatives of the fishing community, and a survey designed, field staff will begin contacting fishermen to set up interviews. Interviews will be conducted using one-on-one or small group formats. Field staff will use Open OceanMap (Desktop GIS application) to collect shapes representing participants' fishing grounds and other non-spatial attributes, including demographics, basic operations (gear types, crew size/composition, operating costs and revenues), and other descriptive characteristics. Field staff will be trained in field methods, data preparation, quality control, and some analysis.

Field staff members are expected to live full time on the Oregon Coast; moving from port-to-port during the entire field season (approximately ending in April/May 2010). Housing, travel, and meal expenses will be reimbursed. Teams of two are encouraged to apply together as the field staff will be working as a team for the entire field season.

Spanish, Vietnamese, or other language skills a plus.
