Research opportunity in Disturbance ecology (GIS/statistics), Wenatchee, Washington

A research participation opportunity is available with the US Forest Service (USFS), Pacific Northwest Research Station, in Wenatchee, Washington, USA.

The research participant will collaborate with Forest Service scientists on research related to the effects of disturbances and climate change on dry coniferous forest ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Potential research topics include wildlife habitat analysis, predicting and monitoring change in forests, post-fire vegetation recovery, restoration treatment effectiveness, and tree growth responses to climatic variability. The research participant will be involved as a team member with skills in spatial and statistical analyses and will contribute to written reports and publications.

Appointment activities include:
  • Conducting spatial analyses using GIS software 
  • Conducting statistical analyses of ecological data
  • Acquiring and managing spatial and non-spatial data
  • Designing, populating, and managing databases for research data
  • Writing scripts and programs (e.g., in R or Python)
  • Contributing to research publications

Qualifications: 
  • The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in forestry, ecology, wildlife biology, geography, statistics, or a closely related field
  • U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred skills:
  • Demonstrated experience in spatial data analysis
  • Knowledge and experience in conducting statistical analyses
  • Experience using R and/or SAS software for data manipulation and statistical analyses
  • Good understanding of object oriented languages such as Python, R
  • Detail-oriented, thorough, well-organized, and effectively able to manage time
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate technical information effectively

NSF undegraduate research at University of Central Florida in Belize with GIS, drones and spatial storytelling

This summer at the University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fourth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science."  The program offers fully funded summer research experiences for undergraduate students in Belize and Orlando for 7 weeks.  The program is open to all U.S. students and runs June 3 – July 18, 2019.  We are interdisciplinary in nature emphasizing community GIS, citizen science, drones and spatial storytelling through mixed methods.

UCF is hosting a Facebook Live Event "Secrets to an Awesome Citizen Science GIS REU Application" on Tuesday, March 12 @ 2 pm EST. Join Dr. Hawthorne (REU PI) and Dr. Hannah Torres (REU Faculty Mentor) as we give away the secrets to a successful application to our National Science Foundation (NSF) #REU Site in Orlando and Belize. More about our REU Site: This year's research direction is focused on mapping coastal and island resiliency with drones and spatial storytelling. Students will work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, University of Belize, The Hopkins Belize Village Council, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program.

Compensation:
 Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including a $3500 research stipend, a meal allowance, free shared housing in Belize and Orlando, up to $750 in travel support to/from the REU Site, up to $750 for post-REU conference travel, and 2 research methods books.

DESCRIPTION
The focus area of this REU site is computational modeling to serve and enhance the Portland metropolitan region as it grows and evolves. You will be involved in a cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research project and trained in computational thinking across different disciplines and communities. You will learn the fundamental skills of computational modeling that will help you understand and solve complex problems in a complex world. After a 2-week initial training, each student will work on an 8-week research project completed in a research lab under a mentor’s guidance and with the involvement of a community partner. At the end of the internship, you will present the research outcomes to the community partner. Weekly site meetings, seminars, site visits, and a final symposium will enrich the unique internship and provide you with an intellectual toolbox that has the potential to have a lasting impact on your career.

ELIGIBILITY
- Completed one or two years of college.
- Majoring in a STEM or related discipline.
- US citizens or permanent resident.
- Students from institutions with limited STEM and research opportunities, such as 2-year community colleges, are encouraged to apply.

IMPORTANT DATES

Are you (or do you know) an undergrad looking to gain some field research experience and work in a fantastic place this summer for $15.00 an hour (30 hours per week - more of less)?  Then please see this job posting:

Looking for a Field Research Assistant to help  conduct range assessment surveys to collect data that will be incorporated with satellite data using computer models.  The FRA be going on multi-day field expeditions with me around Wallowa County (truck, foot, horseback) while on survey and be working on data entry and with the models while in town, after suitable R&R.  They'll be working out of Enterprise, Oregon - with housing provided.  

The position is through OSU, but open to undergrads from anywhere.  

Important: The posting closes on Tuesday, June 13.  Sorry about the rush, but the funding thing was interesting and we need to get someone hired before a training on June 21-22.

​Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) Wireless Network of Bots for Monitoring Ecosystem of Forest
 
We are seeking applicants for an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) position in summer 2017 to make a wireless network of bots for monitoring the ecosystem of forest at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. This research will contribute to the location based open source sensorsproject which is currently conducted by the Cartography and Geovisualization group at College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science at Oregon State University.
 
The position will be based at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (on the west slope of the Oregon Cascades near Blue River, Oregon); travel will be required for short trips to Oregon State University (Corvallis, Oregon). The Andrews Forest was established in 1948 as an US Forest Service Experimental Forest, and since 1980 is one of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites. The field station has modern apartments with full kitchens, a well-equipped computer lab, and wireless internet (seehttp://andrewsforest.oregonstate.edu/ for more information on the site, facilities and research programs at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest). The landscape is home to iconic Pacific Northwest old-growth forests of cedar and hemlock, and moss-draped ancient Douglas firs; steep terrain; and fast, cold-running streams.
 
The 10-week program will fit student on either the quarter or semester systems. The REU student will conduct supervised and guided research and develop his/her own individual project related to the grant. Participants will closely work with the PIs of the project and a team of students working on the grant. Housing and a weekly stipend of $550 will be provided.
Position Requirements: Applicants should
 
•         Exhibit proficient skills to design Arduino or Raspberry sensors;
•         Understand the fundamental mechanism of wireless network;
•         Familiar with GPS/GNSS receivers and interested in location based services;
•         A general understanding of python, database and web mapping techniques is desirable.
 
The applicant is expected to mostly stay in Corvallis, and occasionally travel to H.J. Andrews Forest. To survive in the forest, applicants should have a valid driver’s license in order to commute between Corvallis and the study site at the Forest, prove her or his ability to carry a heavy pack (40+ lb) for moderate distances over uneven terrain, and be comfortable spending several days at the base in the H.J. Andrews Forest to test and deploy the bots.
 
Eligibility is limited to currently enrolled undergraduates that have a graduate date no sooner than fall 2017. Further, all applicants must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents. Portland State University's Center for Climate & Aerosol Research is recruiting high potential undergraduate students to participate in a National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Portland State University.

Students will conduct research with PSU faculty from the Center for Climate and Aerosol Research (CCAR) for 10 weeks during the summer (June 26 to Sept. 1, 2017).  No previous experience with atmospheric research is expected.

They are especially interested in recruiting community and rural college students.  There is a $4500 stipend, room & board, and travel expenses to Portland are covered.

The Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) Group at the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) is looking for Post Bachelor Research Associates to support spatial research initiatives with special emphasis in remote sensing and imagery analysis techniques to support population modeling.  The work will include imagery/data collection, supervised classification input, pattern recognition to ascertain model accuracy, and verification and validation of outputs. This position would be in support of our Settlement Mapping initiatives to develop accurate data to locate and characterize human settlements. Potential opportunities and guidance for publications and presentations of research in professional journals and to the scientific community will be available and we strongly encourage participation. Appointments typically range from three months to one year subject to renewal upon availability and job performance.
 
Qualifications
Bachelors’ in geography, geospatial science, remote sensing, imaging science or a closely related discipline with exposure to working with digital spatial data and imagery.
 
REQUIRED:
 
• Experience with GIS principles and analytical techniques, data management, and visualization.
• Experience with commercial GIS (ESRI products including ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcGIS) is required.
• Excellent communication (oral and writing), organization, and decision-making skills. Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential.
 
2. Research Fellow in Watershed Modeling and GIS | USDA | Raleigh, NC

The Center for Integrated Forest Science (CIFS) seeks an ORISE Research Fellow (orise.orau.gov/science-education/internships-scholarships-fellowships) in Watershed Modeling and GIS.  The CIFS is a research unit within the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station and is developing new research approaches that are more integrated and conducted at larger scales.  The Center’s goal is develop and implement innovative research approaches that provide timely, relevant, and credible science to natural resources managers and policy makers. The incumbent will participate in ongoing team-oriented research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances.  Research opportunities include, but are not limited to the application of watershed modeling (e.g., using available models such as SWAT), GIS, and landscape-scale analyses to assess the impacts of land use and climate change on water resources.
The position is for one-year, part time - 25 hours per week. The pay rate is equivalent to an annual stipend of approximately $39,000. A limited amount of travel funding for attendance at scientific meetings is also available.  The anticipated start date is March 1, 2017.
 
Qualifications

On behalf of Northwest Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (NW PARC), I would like to invite you to attend our upcoming workshop, Citizen Science: Expanding Science and Ecological Literacy, 24 February 2015 in Portland, OR.  The workshop is part of a joint meeting sponsored by Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology (SNVB) and NW PARC.

This workshop will be of particular value to students, researchers, government and educators throughout the Pacific Northwest whom are interested in the topic of citizen science and/or either developing or coordinating citizen science projects of their own.

Workshop fee includes lunch and coffee and we are inviting workshop and conference delegates to an informal social the evening following the workshop.

NSF community geography/GIS undergraduate research opportunity in Atlanta

Here is an exciting summer research opportunity for undergraduate students.  

This summer at Georgia State University in Atlanta,  Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site: Addressing Social and Environmental Disparities through Community Geography and Geographic Information Systems.  The project is funded by the National Science Foundation.  The program runs June 18th – August 2nd.   
 
Research Interests: Working with faculty mentors in one of three research tracks, 10 selected undergraduates will engage in community-based research and fieldwork to quantitatively and qualitatively examine neighborhood change, property markets, air and soil quality, urban green spaces, and neighborhood visioning in partnership with neighborhood residents and community groups. 

Compensation: Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including: a $3000 stipend, up to $250 in travel support to/from Atlanta, up to $750 for conference presentations, free room and board at GSU, and 3 required texts.
