The Benton County Assessment Department is on the search for a GIS Technician to join the team. This position provide assistance and support to Cartography Department by working with GIS data, maps and other cartography tools. Perform specialized duties within the Assessment Department such as processing deed transfers, seg/merges, Lot Line Adjustments, Partition Plats, TCA changes and other such procedures.  Assist with annual tax roll processing, provide customer service to the public and general office support such as assisting at the counter and answering the phone.


Essential Functions
Cartography Assistance and Support
  • Plot legal descriptions from deeds and checks for consistency with department mapping and previous recorded documents. Ensure accuracy by updating maps or coordinating with individuals responsible for deed preparation. 
  • Maintain department GIS data, maps, and tax lot cards to reflect recorded subdivision and partition plats, lot line adjustments, annexations and right-of-way dedications. Prepares journal vouchers to incorporate GIS updates into assessment database. 
  • Coordinates with landowners, title companies, attorneys, other departments, and the general public regarding mapping issues. 
  • Research, revise maps, and coordinate with other staff to satisfactorily resolve issues in a timely manner. 
  • Identify opportunities for improving the accuracy of GIS data and maps, as well their consistency with other department records. Coordinates with other department staff to implement necessary improvements. 
  • Review subdivision and partition plats prior to recording. Prepares intake forms. Coordinates with county staff to ensure plats are returned to the county surveyor in a prompt manner. 
  • Maintains department GIS records and maps in accordance with ORMAP standards.
Assessment Department General Duties
  • Process deeds and other documents to modify and maintain current ownership and tax records.
  • Maintain tax lot cards to reflect documents used for ownership changes.
  • Process seg/merges, lot line adjustments, subdivisions, TCA changes, acreage changes, etc. in property tax records.
  • Assist with special tax roll projects such as fire patrol and tax code maintenance.
  • Assist in calculation of property taxes, fees and special assessments.
  • Audit data for accuracy of inventory, acreage, classifications, TCA’s and multiple values.
  • Review ownership and chain-of-title documents for accuracy of records.
Assessment Office Support/Customer Service
  • Calculate and collect fees and prepayments
  • Maintain database of receipts, prepayments and fees by account
  • Assist the public via phone, email or in person by providing answers on subject matters such as department function, regulations, procedures and property tax questions.
  • Use a computer database to enter, edit and retrieve information.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints verbally, on the phone, at the counter and in writing.
  • Research, explain and document information on property ownership, deeds, property location and other Assessment records and resource information.
  • Provide assistance to the public regarding the use of self-help areas, computers, map references, sales information, GIS data, etc.
  • Receive & post property payments for property tax and various Assessment fees.

Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  • Associate's degree or two-year technical degree in a field related to the assignment such as Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Information Systems and Cadastral Mapping. 
  • 4 years of experience in assessment and tax, property appraisal or real estate, GIS, legal descriptions, mapping or closely related experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

  • Annual salary range of : $49,409.20  - $60,522.23 , depending on qualifications and experience.

​This position involves sitting and working on computer for extensive lengths of time. May be required to stand for long periods of time. Some lifting under 10 pounds.
