Intern – GIS Analyst

MIG, Inc. is a national firm specializing in planning, design, communications, management, science, and technology. We believe that the environment around us has a profound impact on our lives and our shared vision: is of a world where people, communities, and ecosystems thrive. For over 35 years, MIG has engaged the talents and vitality of top professionals who plan, design, and sustain environments that support human development. Our team members are passionate about their work and share a common desire to engage closely with our clients and the communities impacted by our work.

Our Berkeley accessibility team is seeking a temporary Intern GIS Analyst to join our multi-disciplinary team. This position may transition to full-time, regular employment in the future dependent upon workload, performance, and candidate interest. This is a paid internship that will last from approximately April 2021 through December 2021, though the exact timing is negotiable based upon availability and workload. The candidate does not need to be local to Berkeley and can work remotely. The typical schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, at least 20 hours/week and up to 40 hours/week depending on available work. For current students, considerations will be made for part-time internships to accommodate academic schedules. Please note that completing an internship is not a guarantee of a full-time offer in the future. MIG will support any student that wishes to receive academic credit for this internship.

Responsibilities – What You’ll Accomplish
  • Collaborative Teammate: The MIG internship program will offer exposure to many facets of a contemporary, integrated urban design, planning, and landscape design practice. As the GIS Intern, you will gain experience working with a team of planners, designers, and Project Managers in all aspects of a project’s start through implementation.
  • GIS Project Work: Your primary duties as the Intern will be to provide GIS analysis and mapping for report development for various projects. Additional GIS duties include supporting the maintenance of data collection methodologies and procedures; providing the integration of database with existing GIS tools; providing QA/QC of GIS work products and data documentation; producing geodatabase deliverables for clients; and providing on-going mapping and analysis procedures for implementation tool development.
  • Other Project Work: Additional tasks may include managing project data and workflows that support project teams, report development, meetings with clients and the public, and conduct various technical analyses.

Experience and Qualifications for Success – What We’d Like to See
To accomplish these responsibilities, you will be able to manage competing priorities, think
critically and creatively, work as part of a collaborative team in an open environment, and
maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie. You will ideally have some combination of the
following qualifications:
  • Achieved or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field, background in computer science, geography, science, or engineering field a plus.
  • Relevant experience in using geographic information systems.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products, including but not limited to mapping, research, analysis, and report summaries.
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis and data in a clear and digestible format to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to develop mapping applications and tools.
  • Excellent skills in creative thinking and problem-solving with great attention to detail.
  • You are an adaptable teammate who is willing to pitch in and help others.
  • Ability to perform complex spatial analysis with a variety of GIS data formats.
  • Software proficiency in ArcGIS, Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat (AutoCAD and Adobe Suite a plus).
  • Programming language experience in SQL, Javascript, and Python.

How to Apply

If this position sounds like a fit for your skillsets and you are passionate about creating and improving communities, we would love to hear from you! Please email your resume, work samples, and a cover letter to hr@migcom.com.
