Planning/Environmental Studies Internship Opportunity – Tree Inventory
The City of Forest Grove Job Title: Planning Intern – Tree Inventory (Unpaid Internship) Overview: The City of Forest Grove is seeking an individual to inventory and analyze trees within the City known as the urban forest. The work involves collection of data using maps and forms and data entry using computer programs. The individual will also have the opportunity to analyze the data and complete a report summarizing major findings. The City’s Senior Long Range Planner will provide day-to-day project coordination under the direction of the Community Development Director. Required Qualifications: Applicants must be detail-oriented and have the ability to interpret maps, use a computer, and work independently. The ideal candidate should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70 and experience with a variety of computer applications such as spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software. Coursework and/or an interest in environmental studies or arboriculture are helpful. Detailed Description: The City of Forest Grove, Community Development Department, is in need of assistance preparing an inventory of trees within the City. The information will be used to identify the distribution of trees species within the City, overall tree condition, and environmental benefits to the community resulting from the urban forest. The data will also be used to establish a baseline to set priorities for the City’s community forestry program and support the City’s Tree City USA Growth Award application for calendar year 2010. The position will include a combination of field work and office tasks. The planning intern will assist the planning staff in collecting data in the field and from aerial photos. The planning intern will also assist planning staff with entering data into a database for analysis and reporting.
