positions in various program areas. Planning interns are typically undergraduate or graduate students seeking entry-level work in the field of urban planning. The interns will work under the guidance of professional planning staff on a variety of assignments. Job duties for interns typically span a broad spectrum and may vary with a particular assignment based on individual skills and project needs. There are three current openings, but qualified candidates will be placed on a list for other positions that may become available over time. Currently, planning interns would support work in the following program areas: Cully Main Street; Central City 2035; Urban Design Studio. Responsibilities may include: ~ Data collection and organization, land use and conditions surveys, and other fieldwork ~ Research and analysis ~ Writing and editing reports ~ Mapping information ~ Canvassing or surveying community members ~ Meeting facilitation and note taking ~ Organizing and staffing public events ~ Working with diverse communities ~ Organizing and summarizing information for presentations Basic qualifications: ~ Familiarity with urban planning principles ~ Experience with data collection, organization and analysis ~ Clear and concise writing ~ Attention to detail ~ Flexibility, initiative, and ability to work as part of a team ~ Ability to be comfortable in public situations and to make clear presentations ~ Familiarity with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint Desired skills and experience: ~ Graphics and urban design skills ~ Experience working with under-represented or minority communities ~ Experience with public opinion surveys or focus groups ~ Foreign language ability ~ Knowledge of and experience with GIS ~ Experience with Adobe Creative Suite; Sketch-Up ~ Valid state driver’s license and a driving record that meets the City’s good driver criteria Start date: January - March 2011 Pay rate: $12.00 per hour Hours: Approx. 20 hours per week, depending on the project and individual needs.
