Job Duties/Scope Of Work
Hanford Mission Integration Solutions (HMIS) is seeking an archaeologist with experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping to join its successful Cultural & Historic Resources Program (CHRP) on the Hanford Site in Washington state. The Hanford Site contains evidence of nearly continual occupation for the last 10,000 years and played a crucial role in the Manhattan Project during World War II. The Hanford Site is now the largest, most complex environmental remediation project in history. HMIS, as a prime contractor to US Department of Energy (DOE), implements DOE's Cultural Resource program under the direction of the Hanford Site DOE Cultural Resources Manager. Our CHRP staff help ensure the DOE and the contractors working on site act in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Under the supervision of the Environmental Regulatory Services Manager and in close coordination with other CHRP staff archaeologists the successful candidate will primarily be responsible for developing maps in ArcMap or ArcPro in support of the cultural resource review process for individual operations or maintenance projects on Hanford and maintaining the geospatial data for the program. The position requires experience with digital database management and GIS data processing. The ideal applicant will also have relevant experience in Cultural Resources Management, Archaeology, Historic Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will also assist in the overall CHRP program conducting activities such as: assisting in the development the Area of Potential Effect; conducting literature reviews; conducting field surveys and shovel testing; documenting cultural resources; gathering data to make recommendations for site eligibility under the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); authoring NHPA compliance reports; addressing potential effects; assisting DOE in consulting with agencies and tribes; and conducting any data recovery, monitoring, or implementing other stipulations to eliminate or minimize effects to cultural resources. Other job duties of this position include: * Create maps for other groups within the Environmental organization. * Participate in site-wide cultural resources planning efforts. * Develop strategies, schedules, and assist in cost estimates for completion of cultural resource reviews. * Integrate and interface with DOE, other HMIS organizations, and Hanford Site contractors. * Attend regular meetings within HMIS. * Support National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) determinations. * Assist other archaeologists in successfully completing compliance reviews. * Participate in Section 110 activities, such as routine condition monitoring, assist in making NRHP eligibility recommendations, and conducting surveys. * Perform regular status updates and reports. * Manage project schedules and budgets. * Assist with interpretive program development, public education, and conduct cultural sensitivity training on the Hanford Site. * Conduct research on Hanford site cultural resources and present findings in academic, scientific, and public forums, as funding allows. Basic Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree in Archaeology, Historic Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field. * A minimum of 2 years' experience in conducting archaeological fieldwork and contributing to technical reports, GIS mapping, or a combination of fieldwork and geospatial experience. * Experience in GPS unit and GIS site documentation methods. * Experience in historical research, including historical maps and aerial imagery and their application in Cultural Resources evaluation and context development. * Technical knowledge of Pacific Northwest Archaeology, ethnology, archaeological field methods, and site evaluation procedures, as well as technical knowledge of methods relating to site documentation. * Technical knowledge of Federal/State/Tribal government standards/criteria regarding cultural/historic practices and compliance. * Requires excellent oral and written communication skills. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Desired Qualifications * GIS Certificate. * Master's degree in Archaeology, Historic Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field. * Existing WISAARD account and experienced in using WISAARD. * Emphasis and experience in Pre-Contact archaeology or Zooarchaeology. * 5-7 years' experience in conducting archaeological fieldwork and contributing to technical reports, GIS mapping, or a combination of fieldwork and geospatial experience.
