Position Summary
Perform a variety of engineering duties in the Development Review or Capital Projects workgroups to ensure private and public development complies with City regulations. A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Planning, Computer Science, Engineering, Geographic Information Systems or related field, or experience as lead worker in Geographic Information Systems.   Experience must include the use of GIS software to develop maps, perform analysis, and develop applications.   Background in cartography is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates
A valid Oregon Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

Probationary Period
This position is based on the successful completion of a nine-month probationary period.

Position Overview

As we rapidly grow, we are seeking a skilled and motivated Geospatial Technician to contribute to the preparation, analysis, and quality assurance of advanced 3D LiDAR datasets. You will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of our geospatial products while defining labeling policies and instructions to guide our data annotation partners. Key Responsibilities

• Perform quality control (QC) on 3D LiDAR maps, marking locations for corrections and ensuring the highest level of accuracy.
• Conduct application quality assurance (QA) by validating uploads and dataset integrity.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define labeling policies and provide clear instructions for annotation partners.
• Execute final QA/QC on project deliverables to ensure compliance with company standards.
• Support project planning and data management activities, including report creation and workload distribution.
• Communicate project status and updates effectively to team leads.
• Assist with the development and implementation of QA/QC standards to drive operational excellence.
• Coach and mentor team members to enhance technical capabilities and knowledge sharing.

Required Skills and Experience

• Education & Certification: 2–5 years of relevant survey mapping experience. An Associate’s degree in CAD, GIS, or a related field is highly desirable.
• Technical Proficiency: Extensive experience with computer-aided design software and LiDAR point cloud processing tools. Familiarity with creating and managing 3D models from survey data.
• Survey Knowledge: Strong understanding of field and office surveying methods, and best practices.

The City is seeking an energetic and skilled intern to assist the City’s GIS Division of the Transportation and Engineering Department with multiple data collection and mapping projects. The intern will learn about the functions and services of a local government and gain experience in the role of GIS in a public agency, particularly as related to a typical Public Works Department.

This position is estimated at 20 hours per week during the school year and/or the summer and is a part-time, intern position.

In addition to the responsibilities listed below, the intern may attend meetings and be assigned trainings to understand more about the role.

Essential Job Duties

• Collecting location and other information about assets in the field using a mapping-grade Trimble GPS unit.  Examples of assets the intern may be tasked with mapping include fiber infrastructure, water meters, sewer cleanouts, catch basins, and street signs.
  Entering attribute information for existing mapped features through Esri’s Field Maps app or in the office by researching old plans, building files, and other source materials.
  Documenting work in progress.
  Based on the selected candidate’s skills and interests, there are a wide variety of other projects the intern may be tasked with assisting on in order to gain experience and knowledge. These projects may include:
  • collecting inventory data on existing ditch, swale, and culvert structures
  • collecting information on existing sidewalks and sidewalk ramps, including width, cross slope and running slope
  • creating applications in Portal for ArcGIS for internal users
  • performing basic analysis and creating maps for other City departments
  • writing python scripts to automate processes

Selection Criteria
Prerequisite Skills:

• Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn quickly.
• Ability to communicate and work as part of a team.
• Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
• Resourceful and self-directed.  Willingness to ask for assistance or clarification and to follow instructions.
• Enthusiasm and interest in working for local government with a demonstrated commitment to service.
• Some experience with Esri GIS software with the ability and desire to learn.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

 
Optional Skills:
Knowledge or experience of the functions and services of local government are desired but not essential.

Experience with Trimble GPS equipment is desired but not essential.

The ideal candidate will have completed college level coursework in GIS, geography, or a related program. Computer skills including word processing and the ability to quickly learn new software are required.  Preference will be given to students at the Junior year of college or above, or students seeking work experience in a related field that can demonstrate the level of skill required for the position.
