City of Oregon City is looking to hire a 3 month summer seasonal GIS position.

Here’s some information about the Internship:
-$18/hr
-3 month term (rough time frame of June/July/Aug, although we’re somewhat flexible)
-Will involve working with our GIS analyst on the following projects:

• Researching digital as-built diagrams to discover unmapped underground and aerial conduits.  This will also involve field work to verify locations/conduit contents.
• Updating sidewalk/ADA ramp GIS layers.  Will require field work.
• Inventorying all utilities/poles/mast arms as signalized intersections and updating our GIS asset inventory
• Developing Esri story maps for select projects
• Design and print maps (ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro)

 
Some of the skills we’re looking for are:
-Self-motivated and ability to work somewhat independently
-Competence and experience using ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro to edit feature classes and design and print maps
-Driver’s license (we will supply the vehicle) and ability to visit field locations (usually streets and intersections)

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences is offering a unique opportunity for an individual to lead and become the face of a newly evolving Geospatial Data Science Center.  This individual will work closely with the Chair of the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment, and The Division of Research, Economic Development, and Engagement, to develop a center that broadly serves the geospatial needs of ECU’s academic affairs and health sciences campuses, while guiding the center to become a hub for innovative solutions that assist residents in Eastern North Carolina (ENC). The candidate is expected to communicate, work, and interact with individuals in academia, federal, state and local government, industry and the citizens of NC. The expectation is this individual will develop an agile roadmap for bringing in funded research, developing transformative projects in ENC and beyond and eventually have the center be self-sufficient based on income from projects. Deliverables from the center should combine the latest geospatial technologies with customer/user-centric design and data-driven insights to consistently deliver information that can expand research, develop novel approaches in industry, and provide the necessary knowledge to guide community management and policy in ENC.
 
A successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the following areas:
1. To provide vision, leadership and strategic direction for the overall development and advancement of the Geospatial Data Science Center.
2. To cultivate donor relationships, coordinating fundraising processes and overseeing the authoring of proposals to a wide variety of funders.
3. To establish connections and guide quantitative and qualitative inquiries and projects with other researchers and students at ECU.
4. To seek out and execute consulting engagements for paying clients in the private, public and non-profit sectors with the goal of bringing about regional transformation.
5. To help produce projects that will lead to the successful development of tools that become essential to applied research and management and policies in eastern North Carolina.
6. To promote the efforts of the Geospatial Data Science Center via national media, industry conferences, research presentations, webinars, website, etc.

1. Maintains complex GIS data; researches and verifies data for inclusion in GIS database.

4. Develops methods; preliminary mapping and design layouts; determines methods to be used and develops procedures; designs final map layouts; and executes design drafts. 
5. Creates spatial overlays and maps in support of staff projects by reviewing information from a variety of existing data; performs complex analysis and database queries; and creates, implements, and maintains GIS databases. 
6. Writes programs and scripts for development of mapping products. 
7. Codes and creates mapping information in order to update and maintain mapping layers and controls quality by verifying the accuracy and integrity of data. 
8. Responds to mapping and information requests from employees and the public regarding property ownership, jurisdiction, and legal. 
9. Trains staff in GIS applications, development of scripts, and other aspects of GIS. 
10. Assists other GIS staff in installing and testing new GIS software; assists in resolving and troubleshooting GIS-related problems and requests; and provides technical support on GIS software. 
11. Serves as technical resource for other staff on difficult GIS database and application issues and coordinates and leads data conversion and process improvement initiatives. 
12. Serves as liaison with GIS stakeholders in other work units and organizations in the development and maintenance of GIS data, shares information, and coordinates projects. 
13. Plans and organizes work assignments, processes, and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

• Associate's Degree in engineering technology, drafting technology, geographic information systems, computer technology, or a related field; AND
• Five (5) years of experience in the use and operation of GIS systems and applications. OR
• Seven (7) years of experience in the use and operation of GIS systems and applications.

*Job Description Summary*
The Program Specialist for the Allen Coral Atlas project in National Geographic Society?s Geographic Visualization Lab will assist with day-to-day management for initiatives and activities related to the Allen Coral Atlas (?the Atlas?).  The Atlas project works with external and internal partners to create a remotely sensed maps of global coral reefs from frequent satellite images. The Program Specialist will help the Atlas develop regionally and then globally, by supporting the geographic visualization, field verification, and community engagement components of the project.

*Responsibilities*

• Liaise with individuals and organizations collecting coral benthic data, supporting capacity development as warranted, working with trainers and/or regional coordinators. Draft program content, including training and outreach materials. Support the roll out of tools and methods to collect, store and analyze data for calibration and validation of Atlas maps in collaboration with project partners (25%).
• Under the Supervision of the Senior Director for the Atlas, support management of the day to day implementation of the work plan for the NGS Allen Coral Atlas portfolio. This includes working with Geographic Visualization Lab and Atlas team members, subject matter experts and other key stakeholders from the coral reef science, monitoring, and management community to implement program activities collaboratively, including writing program documents. (20%)
• Support the Senior Director for the Atlas across all aspects of program management to ensure institutional and partnership priorities are met. Includes assisting in work plan development, tracking project milestones and deliverables, supporting the execution of contracts for services, arranging travel and supporting the execution of in-person events. • Work with other team members in the Geographic Visualization Lab, other NGS Labs, NGS impact initiatives, marketing and storytelling and external partners to reach achieve programmatic goals (20%)
  
• Conduct relevant assessments, e.g. of existing ecosystem monitoring platforms, ongoing monitoring efforts in regions, various organizations' capacity and needs (15%)
