The mission of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources (FHNR) is to protect, restore, expand and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their benefits and promote their value within and outside of the urban ecosystem.
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under the direction of Directors and Program Managers in the FHNR division, provide technical and field assistance for the restoration and management of natural resources throughout the city and assure that the agency is in compliance with wetlands, stormwater management and other environmental regulations and restoration performance standards.
  • Assist senior staff in conducting ecological and environmental monitoring in the city’s sub-tidal estuaries, streams, tidal and freshwater wetlands, shorelines, grasslands and forests. Assist in organizing field equipment and managing interns.
  • Conduct vegetation monitoring, including plant identification and above- and belowground sample collection, in restored and existing ecosystems. Collect soil/sediment samples and conduct basic soil analysis.
  • Conduct water quality, fish and shellfish, benthic and other aquatic species monitoring, independently or with community partners and volunteers.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret data and present results.
  • Use ArcGIS software to map, visualize and spatially analyze data.
  • Prepare wetland and stormwater permit applications for state and federal regulatory agencies, and complete wetland delineations and other field work in support of permit applications.
  • Prepare maps, figures and final reports to submit to the public, funders, collaborators, internal staff and regulatory agencies.
  • Support senior staff in evaluating the effects of restoration and adaptive management actions on natural resources.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
The Wildlife Research Biologist will assist the Project Leader with completing the objectives of the ATV-Hunter Interactions, Carnivore Interactions, Mule Deer Population Dynamics, and Ungulate Habitat Use Studies, and other future research projects. The Department Wildlife Research Program has ongoing research projects that focus on management of mule deer and elk and their habitat and predators. The Wildlife Research Biologist will help collect, analyze, write, and publish results from data collected as part of research on mule deer and elk and their habitat and predators.

Major duties and responsibilities are to:
  • Gather/acquire data from field studies that may require arduous physical activities requiring hiking across steep and uneven terrain, use of ATVs, snowmobiles, and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Compile, archive and appropriately document datasets collected during Department research and management projects.
  • Conduct spatial and statistical analyses of animal location and other relevant project data.
  • Gather/acquire data from literature reviews and on-line searches requiring use of computers and specialized knowledge of management of large mammals.
  • Summarize and analyze data using geographic and statistical software such as ArcGIS, R, Python, or equivalents. Interpret and summarize data analysis in writing and using visual aids.
  • Write manuscripts suitable for submission to peer-reviewed journals that describe results of research on mule deer, elk, their habitats, and predators.
  • Conduct literature reviews and summarize information on mule deer, elk, their habitats, and predators.
  • Collaborate with staff from the U.S. Forest Service about managing and archiving data collected at the Starkey Experimental Forest.
  • Communicate in person or via phone or electronic media with biologists, land managers, and other natural resource specialists on specific goals and objectives of research.
  • Assemble various GIS layers and data sets needed for analysis to meet research objectives.
  • Communicate with statisticians, conduct analyses, prepare tables and figure summarizing data analysis.
  • Prepare written reports and oral presentations for scientific outlets, the public, professional meetings and managers.
  • Assist with data collection and other tasks required to complete ongoing research projects. 
  • Monitor GPS collared animals using telemetry from the ground and air.
  • Coordinate and manage hunts that occur at the Starkey Experimental Forest.
  • Assist with check station duties at the Starkey Experimental Forest.
  • Investigate mortalities of collared animals and determine cause of death.
  • Lead capture efforts of wolves, cougars, mule deer, elk, and other mammals.
  • Assist Department staff with questions regarding application of research projects to wildlife management in Oregon.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of  biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program; OR
  • One year of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR
  • A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.

Estuary Data Mapper GIS and Data Analyst (Post-Masters research) with EPA Atlantic Ecology Division

A research opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National  Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL). This appointment will be served with the Atlantic Ecology Division (AED) in Na Narragansett, RI.

This research will provide an opportunity to be involved in EPA teams compiling, generating and providing access to data on coastal watersheds and estuarine systems to support decision-making and environmental management applications. The participant may be involved in two projects:
1) the Integrated Nitrogen Management (INM) Project within the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) Safe and Healthy Communities Program, and
2) the Watershed Resilience, Recovery Potential and Sustainability Project
(WRRPS) within the EPA ORD Safe and Sustainable Waters Research Program.

Within the INM project, the ORISE participant's research may involve preparing geospatial information on coastal watersheds and estuaries for inclusion within the EPA's Estuarine Data Mapper application (www2.epa.gov/edm). The Estuary Data Mapper is a stand-alone application that facilitates environmental data discovery, visualization and geospatial data  download for coastal watershed and estuarine systems. Examples of information include historic and projected future nutrient loads and source  allocations, nutrient sinks, indicators of estuarine vulnerability to nitrogen nitrogen loads, groundwater vulnerability and contact times, future scenario scenarios of development and nutrient, sediment loading for the Chesapeake  Bay Watershed based on alternative growth strategies, historic and  projected future atmospheric nitrogen loads, distribution of natural and constructed green infrastructure best management practices in coastal watersheds, watershed model outputs supporting EPA's Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST), data supporting seagrass habitat models and estuarine ecosystem services.

The participant may also have an opportunity to evaluate future loadings to estuarine systems based on sensitiv sensitivity analyses and projected changes in load components. Within the WRRPS Pr WRRPS Project, the participant's research may involve extracting, obtaining and prep and preparing geospatial information on coastal watersheds and estuaries from a v from a variety of sources including EPA's Estuarine Data Mapper, EPA's National National Coastal Assessment, NHD+, a recently developed watershed sustaina sustainability coverages, other state and federal databases and the scientific literature.   Examples of information include residence time and residence time surrogates, freshwater flow into estuaries, geomorphology of estuarie estuaries, tidal range in estuaries, as well as watershed variables such as land use land use/cover, slope, etc. These data will be used to build models to predict predict watershed condition and resilience.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Depart Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Educat Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a master's degree in geography, environmental sciences, oceanography, geology, hydrology, or a closely related field of study within five years of the desired start date. Training in the use of geographic information systems and experience using ArcGIS, including Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and ArcHydro extensions and use of ModelBuilder and/or Python scripts are desired.

This appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant's travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant's health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
