About the Job
David Evans and Associates is currently seeking a GIS Technician to join our onsite project team located in Vancouver, WA. This position will serve within our Client’s Geospatial Services Department (TERG) and will provide professional GIS (Geographic Information System) services utilizing computerized data capture, storage, and analysis techniques for visual displays, spatial analysis, and tabular reports on a wide variety of geographical projects.

Position Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Design and prepare publication quality cartographic products using industry standards.
  • Produce custom photomap products using current GIS software tools and techniques.
  • Perform basic spatial analysis operations to create maps and/or tabular reports. Maintain geospatial databases and ensures data quality and integrity through the use of automated and manual techniques to enter, edit, and process data sets.
  • May give demonstrations, presentations, and produce documents on GIS work being done by the agency.
  • Support the timely delivery of data between Geospatial Services and other organizational units used in the design, acquisition, and construction of our Client’s transmission facilities.

Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as computer science, geography, cartography, natural resources, landscape architecture, and environmental, urban or regional planning, with a strong emphasis in computer-assisted spatial analysis is highly desirable (if no degree, additional work experience is required – see below).
  • Minimum Experience Required: Level 1 position – 2 - 4 years (with required bachelor’s degree; 6+ years without degree, as noted above) of directly-related experience in GIS Support, providing professional GIS (Geographic Information System) services utilizing computerized data capture, storage, and analysis is required.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software is required.
  • Basic knowledge of image processing, remote sensing, and LiDAR data mediums is desired.
  • Experience and proficiency with PC operating systems and standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite 2010 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
  • Experience with SharePoint is required.

General Requirements:
  • GISP (Geographic Information Systems Professional) certification is desired but not required for this position
  • Ability to work independently, and prioritize assignments is required.
  • Proficiencies in critical thinking and deductive reasoning are required.
  • Must be skilled in written, visual, and oral communication.


Additional Requirements:
  • This position requires some travel (5%) for meetings or to field locations.
  • Must have a Current Driver’s License.
  • This position may be eligible for situational offsite work, subject to the completion of a Supplemental. Labor Offsite Work Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Performance Expectations:
  • Must possess interpersonal skills useful in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clientele and management.
  • Must exhibit a continued ability to think creatively and actively learn.

TriMet Hackathon

The Next Open Data Event:The TriMet Hackathon Wednesday June 25, 2014 6:00pm Open Source Bridge Conference The Eliot Center in downtown Portland, Oregon.

We are pleased to announce that The TriMet Hackathon will happen at the Open Source Bridge Conference on June 24–27in Portland. The Open Source Bridge is an annual conference for “open source citizens” and focuses on building community through four days of technical talks, hacking sessions and collaboration opportunities. It will be an evening event open to the public with a free Community Pass.

This second event, in the three-part Open Data Developer Series, will focus on interests captured from participants in the first event:


Utilization of TriMet’s enhanced developer resources and new web services, such as:
  • passenger load capacity and congestion data from TriMet’s recently implemented INIT CAD-AVL system
  • vehicle locations added to TriMet’s GTFS-RT feed
  • cancelations added to TransitTracker web services
Development of a common framework and library for language translations to facilitate release of mobile transit applications in multiple languages. 


Applications that encourage active transportation.  Resources include, but are not limited to:

  •  OpenTripPlanner
  • OpenStreetMap
  • Trimet’s trip planner web services  
  • CivicApps

The Position:

GIS Aide

The City of West Linn is seeking an exceptional GIS Aide.

Under direction of the GIS Coordinator, the GIS Aide will perform GIS tasks including digitizing geographic datasets in ArcMap, scanning large maps, and data entry. Occasional field work may be required.

Minimum qualifications include one year or more of formal GIS training and GIS work experience using ESRI ArcGIS software, Microsoft Office Word and Excel.  Knowledge and skills using ArcMap 10.x editing tools in a geodatabase environment and attention to detail required. A successful candidate must also have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work on a team or independently and be able to achieve project goals within specific timeframes.

Internship w/ Freshwater Trust

Job Title: Habitat Monitoring Internship

Overview: The Freshwater Trust, a non-profit leader in stream and river restoration, is offering a Habitat Monitoring Internship.  The Habitat and Monitoring Departments are seeking an intern to assist with the collection of field data to assess the effectiveness of restoration work designed to benefit salmon and steelhead.  Work will be conducted in a team setting.  Please note that the majority of this work will be conducted in the field on the Sandy and John Day rivers.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Assist with topographic surveys
  • Assist with rapid assessment habitat surveys including large wood counts, measuring stream width/depth, pebble counts and habitat type delineation
  • Conduct photo-point monitoring
  • Use Global Positioning System (GPS) to collect waypoints and navigate

Minimum Skills and Qualifications:
  • A college junior or senior student working towards an undergraduate degree in biology, hydrology, earth science, environmental science or related field
  • Ability to collect and organize data sets
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to travel for extended periods in remote locations (up to 6 days of travel in eastern Oregon)
  • Ability to work safely as part of a team in rural and remote areas, walking over rough and/or slippery terrain, wading in streams with exposure to all types of weather conditions and other natural hazards such as ticks, rattlesnakes and poison oak

Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with salmon biology, stream ecology and hydrology
  • Wilderness First-Aid and CPR certification
  • Valid driver’s license

Position Type/Hours: Full-time, fixed-duration (2-3 months)

Compensation:
$1,000 stipend per month
