UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) 
Learning Hub is hosting our next coreR course in October 2024. This is a five-day introductory course on collaborative, open, reproducible, and essential data science skills. NWGIS User Conference in Seaside, OR - Poster Session Invitation

You and your students are invited to the 2024 NWGIS User Conference in Seaside, OR from September 23-26. New this year, we are having a juried poster session with two $100 Amazon gift card prizes for the overall conference favorite and NWGIS Board favorite. As part of the submission, your students will give a 5-10 minute presentation on their research during a technical track session on Wednesday instead of the typical poster session format. Winners will be announced Wednesday afternoon before the closing Keynote.
 
Students that submit a poster will receive a $50 discount code on their registration fee. A 1-day student registration fee is $100 and a 2-day fee is $200 before the discount. Please have your students submit their posters to me, and if accepted, they will receive a discount code for registration.  We are also welcoming presentations from professors and students up to 20 minutes in length for our technical tracks. Presenters also receive a $50 discount on registration. The deadline for poster submission is Friday, Sept 13 by 5pm PST.

The Position
In addition to making beautiful paper and online maps, the Geographic Information Systems Technician III provides support to end users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the department. This includes analyzing a variety of statistics and spatial data to create diagrams, illustrations and maps; responding to mapping and information requests from employees and the public; maintaining complex GIS datasets; and writing programs and scripts for development of mapping products. The GIS Technician III will work closely with land use and transportation planners on long range planning projects.

The Opportunity
The GIS/Cartography team uses land records like deeds, surveys, and plats along with GIS software to create a base map of property boundaries in the County, called “taxlots.” This taxlot map layer supports the work of A&T's property appraisers, ensuring accurate property taxation, and it's also used by emergency response and countless other agencies, businesses, and individuals.
 
In addition to creating taxlot maps, the GIS/Cartography Section of A&T is also responsible for processing property ownership changes based on recorded deeds and other documents, updating taxing district boundaries to ensure properties are taxed in the correct jurisdictions, maintaining the main situs address repository for the County, and helping customers with mapping and ownership questions.

What You'll Do
  • Analyze and interpret legal descriptions and other data from land records like deeds, surveys, and plats to determine the boundaries of properties in Washington County and who owns them
  • Create and edit GIS taxlot map data and annotation in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ensuring it is up to date and accurate
  • Assist customers including the public, other County staff, and external agencies with questions related to property boundaries, ownership, and jurisdiction

​Schedule and Salary:  Office hours are 8AM-5PM, Monday-Friday. Hybrid/Telework schedules are available; there can be flexibility in start time, however because the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP) information technology solution, there are some technical limitations to performing assigned job duties virtually.  As a result, DAHP requires at least one day in-office per week. 
The annual salary range of compensation for this position is dependent upon qualifications, although the expected hiring salary will typically be less than the top of the range, to allow for growth and development movement.

What you will be doing:
DAHP is the principal department charged with the recordation and protection of Washington’s cultural resources.   Both state and federal law task DAHP with being the central repository for cultural resource data.
 
You will support the geographic information system (GIS) program that enables the agency to meet its state and federal statutes.  You will be responsible for digitizing locational information into ArcGIS SDE databases and capturing related data into Microsoft (MS) Access databases and WISAARD for traditional cultural properties, National Register of Historic Place data, cemetery sites, historic property linear features, archaeological sites, cultural resources reports and reviews Forest Practice Applications.  You’ll work collaboratively with the GIS Program Manager to ensure that DAHP GIS initiatives conform to DAHP policies and are carried out efficiently and accurately. 

Duties
Some of what you’ll be doing includes:
  • Derives, calculates, or determines technical geographic or mapping information, encodes and enters into DAHP’s geographic information system.
  • Uses standard technical processes to produce maps or map/data products.
  • Receives instruction and supervision from higher level cartographic professionals.
  • Evaluates source information and source maps to select the most accurate information to digitize locations into DAHP’s geographic information system.
  • Uses Government Land Office records, U.S.G.S. Quadrangle Maps, current land survey records, photo maps and other sources to perform archaeological and historic site recordation. 
  • Edits data layers within agency GIS mapping applications and enter resource attribute information into SQL databases through WISAARD and Microsoft Access front ends for the following data types:
  • Archaeological Sites
  • Traditional cultural properties
  • National Register of Historic Places data
  • Cemetery sites
  • Submerged Resources
  • Creates new data layers from a variety of sources using processes and procedures prescribed by standard operating procedures.
  • Produces map/data products assigned when standard procedures exist such as planimetric and topographic maps; may use a variety of system layers.
  • Draws maps using conventional cartographic drafting, calculations, and information collection and evaluation methods; uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to collect and compile data for the visual representation of geographic areas.
  • Operates and maintains cartographic and research equipment.
  • Ensures the accuracy and integrity of data collected.
  • Researches new geospatial technolog

Qualifications
REQUIRED:
A two-year degree in cartography, geography, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, computer sciences, remote sensing, land survey, civil engineering, natural resources or closely related field that includes at least:
one course in cartography and 
one course in computer sciences or geographic information systems 
OR
Any combination of relevant undergraduate college education and full-time experience in technical cartographic or geographic information systems production that totals two years.

AND
  • Knowledge of technical cartography including land survey, map projections and standards, geography, land uses.
  • Knowledge of digitizing and editing methods and techniques for geographic information, geometry, trigonometry and arithmetic calculation and problem resolution. 
  • Ability to evaluate and resolve differences between a variety of technical information sources, encode and enter geographic information into a geographic information system, follow standard procedures and resolve technical differences to produce map/data products.
  • Able to learn and understand the language and concepts of our DEI culture and commit to being a part of creating and maintaining a diverse, equitable, respectful and inclusive workplace.

Description: Ducks Unlimited – Great Lakes/Atlantic Region has an opening for two full-time, paid Geospatial Technicians. The successful candidates will have GIS experience with ESRI products and a background in natural resources, wetlands, and wildlife. They will collaborate with a team of GIS professionals to update the US FWS National Wetlands Inventory as needed. ABOUT THE POSITION

The GIS Programmer/Analyst plays an important role at the utility by planning, designing, programming, implementing, documenting, and maintaining MW&L’s Geographic Information System (GIS) applications and computerized systems. QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field with specific GIS coursework and/or training.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in a GIS professional or closely related position.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may qualify.

Special Requirements
  • Driver’s license valid in Oregon, with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced computer and technical skills to operate software including NISC iVUE modules, SCADA, OMS, GIS (ESRI), MS SQL, and Business Intelligence Software.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in utility or municipal engineering.
