Support from this grant program is awarded to outstanding students from community colleges, junior colleges, city colleges, or similar two-year educational institutions to attend the next AAG Annual Meeting. These travel funds are generously provided by Darrel Hess and Robert and Bobbé Christopherson. The award consists of meeting registration, one year membership in the AAG, and a travel expense subsidy of $500 to be used to defray the costs of attending the AAG Annual Meeting.

There are several job openings at the Minnesota Population Center for Research Associates/Research Fellows to work on IPUMS-CPS, IHIS, and/or ATUS-X.

New IPUMS and other Minnesota Population Center Data
  • The IPUMS-USA project released the 2011 American Community Survey (ACS) microdata (www.usa.ipums.org).
  • The IPUMS-CPS project now has March 2012 data, Supplemental Poverty variables, and Health Insurance Unit variables (www.cps.ipums.org).
  • The Integrated Health Interview Survey (IHIS) added 2011 National Health Interview Survey data (www.ihis.us).
  • The American Time Use Survey Extract Builder (ATUS-X) added 2011 ATUS data, which includes information on secondary eldercare (www.atusdata.org).
  • The NHGIS project now has the Census 2010 Summary File, ACS Summary Files, and time series aggregate data available (www.nhgis.org).

Job positions with Clean Water Services

There is one listing for two positions. The first position is very focused on GIS and database management, GPS, etc. with a field work component, and the second position is more focused on being a community resource and heavily involved in our urban tree planting program.

Specialist II/III, GIS
The successful candidate will apply proficient knowledge of GIS software and hardware to analyze, design, develop, test, document, implement, train, administer and maintain spatial maps, products and business processes.  Apply thorough application program language skills to automate and/or enhance maps, databases, queries/reports and business processes.  Lead special initiatives/projects and tasks as assigned, prepare and deliver presentations, writing papers/process documentation, teach desktop GIS software skills to users, provide support for GIS application related questions and problems.

Typically a degree in geography or one of the fields related to GIS applications plus up to one to two years of experience. Applicants should have proficient knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 10.1, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Server for SharePoint, Microsoft SharePoint principles and techniques. Also, proficient knowledge of MS Access, SQL, Python, scripting and database design. Able to lift 50 lbs. Some work may require travel and working in other areas of the company. Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing.

The position is described at the Specialist II / III level, but the position will be filled at the level commensurate with the experience of the selected candidate.

We are seeking a service-oriented team player with excellent technical skills to maintain the City’s asset management program. Duties also include telemetery system reporting and troubleshooting, some safety program and emergency management coordination, and providing detailed analysis and specific studies for Public Works. Ideal candidates will have an outgoing personality with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to analyze and problem solve. An Associate’s degree in GIS (or a related field) and three years of experience are required, a Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Sim Ogle ( Port of Portland GIS Manager) and company have graciously offered to host our meeting, provide an overview of how GIS is used at the Port and give us a tour of Port Headquarters at the Airport.  Refreshments and snacks will be served. After the meeting everyone is invited to join us for a social hour (location TBD) where we can continue the conversation and network with other GIS professionals from the local area.
