Remarks:This position is part of a regional cartographic team supporting regional and forest standard map products and data quality identification.  The incumbent is responsible for the production of quality cartographic map products that are included in the Map Sales Program, such as the Pacific Northwest Recreation Maps, as well as Ranger District, Wilderness, and Special Area maps.

DRM is looking for looking for qualified candidates with extensive hands-on experience in processing spatial and non-spatial data to create and update maps at a regional scale, utilizing software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, as well as working to incorporate identified data edits back into corporate databases.

Major Duties Include:
  • Compile, evaluate, edit, and process Forest Service and other agency corporate spatial and non-spatial data to create and update maps for the Region included the Map Sales Program and for administrative use
  • Prepare source data and create workflows for multi-disciplinary teams to review and validate corporate data for cartographic fitness for map publication
  • Communicate and coordinate the map workflow and review procedures (i.e., editing, timelines, etc.) of a map product for the Map Sales Program with DRM and Forest Resource Area staff by phone, web, or face to face meetings
  • Coordinate with the Forest and other agency personnel in gathering customer expectations and relevant data, and reviewing interim maps
  • Work closely with field specialists to identify edits to both corporate data and to the maps during review process and assures this information gets back to the appropriate stewards
  • Use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Avenza MAPublisher, and ArcGIS software to create cartographic styles/elements, transform existing maps to new formats or revise existing maps
  • Work with resource staff to design layout to create publication ready map products utilizing Adobe InDesign graphic software
  • Build and update tools to identify and report on data quality conditions related to cartographic data standards and map layout techniques to create publication ready map products
  • Create geodatabases and ensure database information is correctly linked to appropriate mapping elements to allow for analysis, correction, and display of data in cartographic products
  • Develop, modernize, and adapt protocols to improve, standardize, and automate cartographic and data assurance workflows
  • Prepare digital files for upload to Avenza Map App and the internal Map Discovery App
  • Help to resolve non-routine cartographic problems
