Cartographer/GIS Analyst w/ GSI (pdx)

Role Description
GSI is looking for a qualified candidate to support our production mapping and graphic needs for both internal and external clients across multiple environmental science disciplines. The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation of cartographic principles and experience using graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator to produce static maps, geologic cross sections, core logs and other graphics as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
​The duties below are not inclusive but characteristic of the type of work associated with the position. The selected candidate may do all or some combination of the duties listed below as well as other related duties.
  • Generate esthetically pleasing and accurate maps using design principles for cartography.
  • Utilize Illustrator and other Adobe products to generate technical figures and marketing materials.
  • Fulfill geospatial analyses and mapping requests for internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrate and apply an understanding/knowledgebase of geospatial topics and best practices including projections, data management and version control, spatial analysis techniques, georeferencing, digitizing, editing features, and field data collection techniques.
  • Learn and apply new skills and tools during the life cycle of a project.
  • Create, edit, and manage vector and raster data, and acquire data from online clearinghouses.
  • Populate geospatial metadata per Federal Geospatial Data Committee (FGDC guidelines)
  • Determine clients' needs, communicate solutions, design workflows and data management techniques to increase efficiencies, and maintain the quality of deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications:
Job seekers applying for the Cartographer/GIS Analyst position should have:
  • Bachelors degree in applicable field, additional education/certifications a plus.
  • Extensive cartographic skills and demonstrated experience with Adobe products.
  • Experience using Esri’s ArcGIS 10x and ArcGIS Pro suite of software.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, keen orientation to detail, and an eye for professional presentation and aesthetics in project deliverables (maps, charts, graphs, tables, and other visualizations).
  • Previous experience working effectively with others in a team environment to deliver quality projects on time and within budgets.
  • Thorough knowledge of the technical application, concepts, principles, and theories in GIS and GPS. 
  • Self-motivated, quick learning, curious, resourceful, flexible individual with a common-sense approach to conducting business and workload management.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to generate high quality static maps and figures for use by our technical and marketing staff.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure GIS and data deliverables meet or exceed our clients’ needs.
  • Prioritize, organize, perform, and direct numerous work assignments in a fast-paced, client-oriented environment. 
  • Generate custom maps and analysis for numerous clients covering a variety of projects. 
  • Integrate disparate data formats beyond traditional Esri geospatial formats, including KML/KMZ, CAD, LiDAR, and other sources of remotely sensed data. 
  • Expand GIS capabilities by exploring new technologies and software, plus ways to improve existing methods, tools, and workflows.
  • Serve as a technical resource in assisting others to troubleshoot and resolve problems with specialized GIS software and infrastructure.

Working Conditions:  Requires frequent computer use in an office setting and may require sitting for long periods of time at meetings. Hybrid work arrangement may be available.
Salary:   This is a full-time position. Salary rate can range between $28.00 to $34.00/hour, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
