Coastal Resilience Liaison/ Environmental Outreach Specialist, Washington Sea Grant (Seattle, WA)

Principal responsibilities are to provide technical assistance and support coastal community efforts to enhance planning, mitigation and response related to TSUNAMIs and other coastal HAZARDS. Serving as liaison to the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) Center for TSUNAMI Research, the position supports PMEL outreach on TSUNAMIs and facilitates governmental and academic collaboration and information sharing. The TSUNAMI and Coastal Resilience Liaison works to enhance public understanding of coastal HAZARDS and improve access to relevant research, data products, information, and other science-based decision support tools. The supervisor for the position is the WSG Assistant Director for Outreach with joint reporting to PMEL. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred but not required) in earth system sciences, oceanography, geography, meteorology, environmental engineering or a related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of professional working experience. 
  • Current knowledge of issues associated with climate and environmental change and coastal natural HAZARDS with expertise in one or more of the following: risk assessment, community preparedness, emergency management, public education and warnings, other related activities. 
  • Technical background in TSUNAMI and coastal flooding issues.
  • Capacity to manage demanding workflow and competing deadlines; initiate, manage and complete complex projects with minimal supervision; work effectively with diverse constituencies; and maintain attention to detail and process.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills that demonstrate effective communications and ability to interpret technical information and explain it accurately in nontechnical language.
  • Successful community/public engagement and outreach experience, including work with research scientists on translating and applying research products for use of and benefit to emergency managers and communities.
  • Professional capability to work effectively at the nexus of academia, communities, and tribal, federal, state and local agencies.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. 
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Washington’s climate adaptation and floodplain management programs, and Certified Floodplain management certification.
  • Knowledge of current resilience and climate adaptation projects and partners in Washington.
  • Experience and training in use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and visualization decision support tools.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish. 
 
Salary and Funding:
Commensurate with education and experience.
