JOTR has a need to stay current with data management processes and technologies, and the park's Science and Resource Stewardship (SRS) is seeking to update legacy data sets. The Specialist will work with JOTR staff to organize project data and reports, manage files and spatial data, and assist with summarizing legacy conservation efforts related to a broad spectrum of projects including, but not limited to, wildlife, cultural, and travel management. More specifically, the Specialist will:
The incumbent must demonstrate strong organizational skills and thorough understanding of data management and file structure. Contract Timeline: o 38-week appointment beginning September 1, 2017 or upon on availability and completion of DOI Background Investigation o 40 hours per week; some overtime may occasionally be required Location: Joshua Tree National Park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in southern California and is a 2- to 3-hour drive from Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas. Joshua Tree National Park is of special management concern, lying in the transition of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites. Aside from the outdoor recreation opportunities and natural wonders within the park, Death Valley and Grand Canyon National Parks, the Mojave Preserve, as well as Lake Mead and Spring Mountains National Recreation Areas are nearby and afford a diversity of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, mountain biking and rock hounding to fishing, boating and skiing/snowboarding. Compensation and Benefits: o $18/hour o Health and dental insurance Job Qualifications: Technical requirements: o Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, geography, or closely related field with coursework and/or experience that demonstrate understanding of the principles of geographic information systems (GIS); Applicants with advanced degree encouraged to apply; o Experience using ArcGIS to create maps, analyze data, and organize layers, required; Knowledge and prior experience using ArcGIS thru Citrix interface, including Spatial Analyst, 3-D Analyst, Data Driven Pages, Spatial Database Engines, and ArcGIS Online extensions will be highly beneficial; o Maintain data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other staff; o Prior experience working collaboratively in a multi-agency environment, desirable; o Ability to work productively, consistently and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals; o Possess strong organizational skills and be detail oriented; o Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with the public, coworkers, and Technical Advisors both orally and in writing, and respond in a professional manner to inquiries from the public regarding work activities; and o Ability to pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks. o Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
