Data Technician I / Forestry Technician I
Location: Portland, OR

Job Responsibilities: Data Technician I
The Data Technician 1 assists the Natural Resource Scientist and Project Managers with vegetation surveys, GPS data collection, map creation, drone flights, and similar data collection tasks. Specific job duties include:
  • Possessing an advanced understanding of geospatial equipment and programs in order to collect data, conduct maintenance, and troubleshoot issues in the field;
  • Using ArcPro, Arc GIS Online, Field Maps, other ESRI related programs and geospatial analysis tools regularly;
  • Efficiently using time to create high quality mapping and data deliverables;
  • Learning to identify target plants within the field and through use of a dichotomous key;
  • Analyzing and presenting geospatial data collected in the field using ArcGIS Pro, Excel, remote sensing software, and similar programs;
  • Leading survey and data collection efforts in the absence of Natural Resource Scientist;
  • Utilizing technology and quality assurance protocols to efficiently collect high quality data;
  • Assisting in and taking lead on job bids related to GIS, and drone projects;
  • Communicating daily with project lead when independently collecting or processing data.
 
Job Responsibilities: Forestry Technician I
  • Working safely and productively in challenging terrain and environments;
  • Maintaining and adding to a positive team environment;
  • Following instructions and working productively with a team of diverse individuals;
  • Identifying common native and non-native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species as well as their preferred habitats;
  • Removing brush, trees, and weedy vines from restoration sites by using chainsaws, brush cutters and mowers;
  • Conducting careful herbicide application to invasive species on a regular basis;
  • Maintaining restoration sites by using hand and power tools;
  • Planting bare-root and containerized plants, trees, shrubs, plugs and bulbs;
  • Making and installing live stake cuttings;
  • Collecting and sowing native plant seed;
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Skills Requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Excellent organizational and data management skills;
  • Extensive knowledge of native and non-native plant species, with an emphasis on aquatic flora;
  • Ability to use ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Google Suite, mobile tablets, various GPS receivers, and other forms of software/hardware for data collection in the field;
  • Ability to efficiently utilize office time and work independently in the field;
  • Excellent spatial awareness and ability to interpret maps while off trail and out of cell service;
  • Advanced knowledge of state and federal regulations related to workplace safety;
  • Understanding of safety requirements for applicable agencies and our insurance providers;
  • Ability to make independent, well-reasoned decisions while knowing when to ask for instruction;
  • Knowledge of the principles of operating and maintaining gas powered tools;
  • Good driving record;
  • Proficiency with speaking, reading, and writing in English.
 
Schedule and Benefits:
  • Work-Week: 40 hours per week (four to five 8-10 hour days each week). Scheduling to be determined based on weather and work needs. Overtime occasionally required.
  • Wages: $25.50-27.50 an hour/ DOE
    • 6 paid holidays (New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas)
    • Paid Time Off: 120 hours of PTO provided on an annual basis. PTO accrued at a rate of 8 hours for every 175 hours worked, starting on the first date of employment. The 80 hours of PTO include 40 hours of sick time required by law.
  • 8 hours of professional development and up to $100 of financial assistance on your first year
  • 8 hours of volunteer time per year
  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans with 75% employer contributions
  • An annual $250 raingear stipend
  • SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with 3% employer match

Position Breakdown (Changes seasonally)
  • 20% Assisting lead biologist in data collection projects, primarily in Spring and Summer
  • 20% Independently conducting data collection or data processing
  • 60% Field work as part of restoration crew
