GIS Intern with Arizona Conservation Corps (Lake Havasu City, AZ)

8/11/2016

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Arizona is providing an opportunity for one upper-level college student or recent college graduate – with education and training in computer science, geography, cartography, or a related discipline – to provide support for a web-enabled geospatial mapping project and work with BLM resource specialists for data collection and improved data management. The assigned work will be in support of the BLM’s vision to create and disseminate accurate, user friendly information about BLM Arizona’s outdoor recreational opportunities and its natural resources. The interns will be AmeriCorps participants hosted by the BLM and administratively managed by the AZCC.

Providing accurate and useful information about BLM Arizona’s outdoor recreation opportunities and its natural resources is not only helpful, but expected by people of all ages and demographics. As the BLM continues to implement land-use plans, it is essential for the BLM to utilize digital tools to distribute maps and other information that fosters a safe, enjoyable, and responsible outdoor experience.  BLM Arizona has an opportunity to introduce six youth to career opportunities in the growing field of geographic information systems (GIS) and database management.

This project will provide an opportunity for the selected interns to learn about BLM land management challenges and responsibilities, and walk through each step of the map production process. Through these experiences, the selected candidates will gain experience in public land management, further their understanding and appreciation of the Bureau’s GIS and geospatial services program.  This experience may provide students, interns, and/ entry level professionals experience by which they may make long term career goals and decisions and would continue and expand student development, recruitment and service opportunities between the BLM and the recipient.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
  • The selected candidates will provide geospatial support to State and Field office staff, for the development and implementation of spatially referenced map products (e.g., GeoPDFs).
  • The youth interns will utilize GIS software to design and create attractive, user friendly maps under the guidance of BLM staff.
  • Completed products will be made available for public consumption using a wide variety of digital platforms that will allow the public to easily search for and browse [BLM] spatially referenced maps; download maps; and track real-time movements on maps using a mobile device’s built-in GPS.
  • Update existing recreation databases and interactive maps used by BLM and the public in support of BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System (National Monuments and National Conservation Areas).
  • Update a variety of BLM databases supporting programs such as Abandoned Mine Lands (AMSCM), Lands and Realty (LR2000 or LRAM), Recreation (RMIS), Invasive Weeds (NISIMS), Facilities (FAMS), Rangeland Health (RAS) or associated planning efforts (ePlanning). Work with subject matter experts to improve the quality of existing and new resource based data.
  • The selected candidates may provide other geospatial support that would contribute to the youth’s overall exposure to the BLM.
