GIS Internship/Specialist w/Hispanic Access Foundation (Remote)

Project Title: GIS/Data Specialist
Project Type: Remote
Duration: 32 weeks (8 months); Target start date is February 5, 2024
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week
Housing: Must be secured by the intern. A housing stipend of $1,000 per month will be provided.
 
Project Background:
This virtual/remote position will be part of the CDNST trails team. This position is a great opportunity to learn about natural resource management and assist on high priority projects that serve agency staff and partners.
The GIS/Data specialist will be working closely with the Trail Administrator on trail data cleanup efforts in both the spatial (GIS) and tabular (NRM Infra database) data sets. The individual will review, edit and update the datasets prior to a data migration for these applications. This data set feeds into public facing websites, is used to report trail and trail bridge inventory, condition, and location to other agencies and many mapping applications. The focus will be updating the data that feeds required reporting to Great American Outdoors Act project funding.
 
Project Duties:
  • Work within ArcGIS managing the GAOA Dataset to create a spatial layer of trail project locations.
  • Work with CDNST trail team to update and edit spatial and tabular data for trails in the database of record.
  • Update data-related webpages to be more user-friendly.
  • Assist with other data related projects as they arise.
  • Resource Assistants (RAs) will work and communicate with a Hispanic Access Program Associate during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3-5 blog posts highlighting their experience and development. (5%)

Desired Qualifications: 
  • 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, recent grads, or young professionals
  • Certificate, Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree in environmental science, natural resources management or Geographic Information Systems preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Completed 2 years at accredited university or earned an Associate’s degree or higher
  • Must be 17 years of age or older
  • Must have a driver’s license.
Working Conditions: The RA will work in their own remote environment. A government laptop will be provided.
 
Stipend + Benefits:
  • $1,300 biweekly stipend*
  • $1,000 monthly housing stipend
  • $50 monthly commuting stipend
  • Optional health insurance coverage
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
*Interns are hired as temporary employees; taxes may be withheld from wage stipends.
