GIS Specialist w/ BLM (Ely, Nevada)

The Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition (ENLC) is currently hiring a  GIS
specialist to work in Ely, Nevada District of the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM).Located in Ely, Nevada, ENLC is a non-profit conservation
organization comprised of public, private, and non-profit partners
dedicated to the restoration of the Western ecosystems through
collaborative teamwork.

Ely is located in east central Nevada, 60 miles from the Utah border.  Ely
is a fairly isolated, small (5,000 people), rural town, located 250 miles
southwest of Salt Lake City, and 250 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada.

GIS Technicial Duties: The objective of this position is to work with the
Ely BLM District to develop a GIS geodatabase of existing rights-of-ways
within the Ely BLM jurisdiction.

The GIS technician will do the following:
  • Collect data and provide a test geodatabase containing at least 5
(five) identified projects to submit for BLM approval prior to submitting
the remainder of the identified projects;
  • Utilize aerial photography  to verify points and/or ground
disturbances when circumstances warrant, i.e. limited access to project
site, conflicts with existing maps, legal land descriptions;
  •         Attempt to ground truth data on each project where existing project
information is  invalid or unclear;
  • Compile the project data into a geodatabase;
  • Provide requested information for as many identified projects as
funding allows.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Qualified applicants should have one or more years
experience with GIS.  A degree in cartography, geography or any degree that
uses extensive GIS is beneficial.

Applicants must also be experienced with 4WD vehicles and should have a
clean driving record for the past 3 years. Experience with utilizing Garmin
or Trimble GPS units and programs (Trimble units and ArcPad) are a plus.

SALARY: $18-20/hour, depending on experience.

SCHEDULE: Positions run from early May through August. This position is
currently for four months, but will likely be extended at least an
additional four months.
