Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a self-motivated and committed Transportation Planning Technician 2 to fill a Geographical Information System (GIS) Technician position located in Tumwater, WA. Under the direction of the GIS Data Products Supervisor, the GIS Technician is responsible for developing and maintaining GIS data sets and products used throughout the agency for project planning, budget development, design, maintenance, traffic congestion management, emergency response and more, essential to the achievement of WSDOT's goals of Safety, Preservation, Mobility, Environment, Stewardship, and Economic Vitality. This position will be responsible for creating and editing GIS and tabular data to develop and/or maintain the statewide Interchange\Intersection data layer(s) and other GIS data layers as needed. Our top candidate must have excellent communication skills as this position will interact with customers to obtain needed information related to mapping content and criteria, and with technical staff to ensure data quality and standard processing is followed and completed. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the GIS Technician will:
  • Use ArcGIS desktop software to load target datasets and appropriate reference layers.
  • Perform on-screen digitizing and data entry to create and/or update the geometry and attributes of GIS data layer(s).
  • Process data appropriately to ensure geometric and attribute integrity and update enterprise GIS library datasets.
  • Track and regularly report status of progress toward completing updates on statewide datasets.
  • Contact business experts to collect materials and guidance needed to determine the needed and correct changes to make in the GIS dataset.
  • Review materials and confirm the appropriate code values and valid ranges for each attribute in the dataset.
  • Compare the source material to the standard or required code values to ensure the source information is sufficient to distinguish all codes values.
  • Compile and index a list of decision rules for how data edits should be done.
  • Prepare illustration graphics to clarify the editing rules.

​Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Competition of 2 college level semester courses focused on GIS concepts and applications of
  • GIS technology OR one (1) year of on-the-job experience as a GIS technician.
  • Completion of a basic training course on Microsoft Excel of no less than 4 hours (as offered by academic or professional Microsoft training organizations).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deliverable goals and deadlines once trained and familiarized with the tasks.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • One (1) year of full-time experience working with GIS data collection, editing, and processing using ArcGIS or ArcPro.
  • One (1) year of experience working with standard office software applications i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, Access.
  • Demonstrated interest in a career in the transportation industry or as a GIS professional.

  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • Occasional same day travel to various locations in Thurston County such as other WSDOT or partner facilities may be required. In-state and out-of-state overnight travel to WSDOT Region
  • Offices or a conference or training location may be occasionally required.
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
