Duties
Summary
This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, with one vacancy in Savannah, GA.
 
This position is also announced under vacancy number NOS-ONMS-2020-0009, which is open to Status Candidates. You must apply to both announcements if you want to be considered for both.
 
Responsibilities
As a Resource Protection Specialist, you will perform the following duties:
  • Serve as the resource protection specialist for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and carry out the policies and purposes of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act, and relevant Presidential Proclamations and Executive Orders.
  • Oversee, develop, and/or implements strategies, activities, policies, regulations, management plans and programs for sanctuaries to conserve, protect, enhance, restore, investigate, and manage sanctuary resources.
  • Serve as a Sanctuary technical Point of Contact to coordinate coastal management projects, to include marine debris programs, such as derelict gear and shoreline debris removal projects.
  • Serve as technical point of contact for performing mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS) efforts, and monitoring technical production and progress, and reviewing work of others for technical adequacy and compliance with instructions or policy.
  • Facilitate all aspects of the sanctuary advisory council including organization and scheduling of meetings, preparation of agendas and meeting materials, publication of announcements, and completion of meeting minutes and summaries.

  • Ability to gather and analyze GIS data.
  • Ability to form and communicate conclusions and recommendations for recurring continuing assignments of limited scope and complexity.
  • Knowledge of marine and ocean management and protection issues and techniques.
  • Knowledge of biological science and techniques pertaining to ecology and marine spill response preparedness.
  • Ability to facilitate communication between an advisory council, management and the public.
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts, principles and practices, in order to advise and assist in all aspects of the GIS technical, administrative and management processes relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Ability to provide input on a portion of a more complex GIS project.
  • Ability to schedule meetings, prepare agendas and meeting materials, publication of announcements, and compile meeting summaries.
