NOAA is offering paid summer internships for undergraduates, recent graduates or masters students depending on the position.  Internships are paid, and include a housing allowance and a strong professional development component through webinars and a final week in the DC area to share experiences.  Applications are due by February 22.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY INTERN

Position Description:
This a 10-week summer internship that will take place within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's, Office of Coast Survey, Hydrographic Survey Division/Pacific Hydrographic Branch. Interns will be involved with the support of populating the National Bathymetric Source (NBS). Data from the NBS will in turn be used to rescheme NOAA's nautical charts, and the intern will work with PHB's product team lead in high priority areas. This data will be curated and repackaged for ingest into the NBS and re-published for public dissemination at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).  
 
Major duties will include, but not limited to:
  • Review and edit archived hydrographic surveys & bathymetric grids.
  • Work closely with the Pacific Hydrographic Branch team in completeting high priority projects.
  • Collect, curate, and repackage data to be ingested into the National Bathymetric System (NBS).
  • Intern will be using commercial GIS software and NOAA's quality control tools to complete their work.
 
Desired knowledge, skills or abilities:
  • GIS experience
  • Major in Geology, Geography, Earth Sciences, Oceanography, Marine Archaeology, Hydrography, Cartography or a related field
 
Benefit to Intern (Summary):
  • Hands on experience in data review and analysis and the associated challenges;
  • Experience with GIS software and quality control tools; and
  • Exposure to hydrographic data acquisition, processing, and analysis for chart application.
 
Location: Seattle, WA
Compensation: $16/hr

MARINE CHART INTERN

Position Description:
This is a 10-week summer internship that takes place at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Coast Survey, Marine Chart Division/Chart Standards Group. The selected intern will gain hands on experience in production within a government environment.
 
Major duties will include, but not limited to:
  • The selected intern will perform various geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Analysis tasks and compile (acoustic and lidar) bathymetric data sets to: generate coverage maps, intersect source layer data in order to generate adequacy maps, generate bathymetric coverage maps and process vessel traffic data (Autonomous Identification Systems).
 
Desired knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • College students of diverse backgrounds who have an undergraduate degree in the following disciplines: Earth Science, Environmental Science Studies, Geography, Information Systems, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, Physical Sciences, Remote Sensing Technology, Spatial Analysis, Geoscience, (e.g., geography, GIS, environmental science) or Engineering (e.g., Civil Engineering, Geodesy, Environmental or Mechanical) background.
  • The intern is also required to have prior knowledge of ESRI, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, and Adobe pdf software.       
 
Location: Silver Spring, Maryland
 
Compensation: $16/hr

NAVIGATION SERVICES INTERN

Position Description:
This is a 10-week summer internship within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's, Office of Coast Survey, Navigation Services Division/Customer Affairs Branch. The intern will gain professional and field experience including travel to/on the Navigation Response Team small boats.  In addition, the intern will have hands on experience with Coast Survey's products and services. 
 
Major duties will include, but not limited to:
  • The intern will develop, update and consolidate GIS tools and applications for use by Navigation Services Division (exact tools to be determined, but may include Navigation Manager stakeholder feedback tools, Navigation Response Branch's float plan, or Coast Pilot authoritative layers).
 
Desired knowledge, skills or abilities:
  • GIS analysis
  • GIS development
  • ArcGIS
  • Python
  • Javascript
 
Location: Silver Spring, Maryland
Compensation: $16/hr
Benefits: $800 housing stipend
