Research opportunity in Disturbance ecology (GIS/statistics), Wenatchee, Washington

A research participation opportunity is available with the US Forest Service (USFS), Pacific Northwest Research Station, in Wenatchee, Washington, USA.

The research participant will collaborate with Forest Service scientists on research related to the effects of disturbances and climate change on dry coniferous forest ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Potential research topics include wildlife habitat analysis, predicting and monitoring change in forests, post-fire vegetation recovery, restoration treatment effectiveness, and tree growth responses to climatic variability. The research participant will be involved as a team member with skills in spatial and statistical analyses and will contribute to written reports and publications.

Appointment activities include:

• Conducting spatial analyses using GIS software 
  
• Conducting statistical analyses of ecological data
  
• Acquiring and managing spatial and non-spatial data
  
• Designing, populating, and managing databases for research data
  
• Writing scripts and programs (e.g., in R or Python)
  
• Contributing to research publications

Qualifications: 

• The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in forestry, ecology, wildlife biology, geography, statistics, or a closely related field
  
• U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred skills:

• Demonstrated experience in spatial data analysis
  
• Knowledge and experience in conducting statistical analyses
  
• Experience using R and/or SAS software for data manipulation and statistical analyses
  
• Good understanding of object oriented languages such as Python, R
  
• Detail-oriented, thorough, well-organized, and effectively able to manage time
  
• Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate technical information effectively
