Course Description & Focus
Cooperative Education in Geography gives students an opportunity to extend their knowledge of Geography and/or GIS through work in a setting that provides learning experiences that are not available in the classroom, but compliment classroom learning. Essentially, students complete an internship with an agency or organization for credit towards their degree or certificate. Under supervision of an employer, students learn to apply classroom concepts and skills to real-world work situations.
Cooperative Education classes need to be set up in coordination with Geography Faculty. This is done on a individual basis between student and faculty member.
This course can be used as elective credit towards the GIS certificate and is a great way to get some experience working in a GIS department and doing 'real' GIS work. For every 30 hours you contribute to your internship, you will receive 1 credit. A typical cooperative education class is completed with a 11-week term.
Geography & GIS students have worked as interns through the cooperative education class at the City of Tualatin, Clean Water Services, private Timber company, and the National Park Service. This can be set up at any company, agency, or organization as long as they are willing to take on a student intern.
