The mission of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources (FHNR) is to protect, restore, expand and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their benefits and promote their value within and outside of the urban ecosystem.
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under the direction of Directors and Program Managers in the FHNR division, provide technical and field assistance for the restoration and management of natural resources throughout the city and assure that the agency is in compliance with wetlands, stormwater management and other environmental regulations and restoration performance standards.
  • Assist senior staff in conducting ecological and environmental monitoring in the city’s sub-tidal estuaries, streams, tidal and freshwater wetlands, shorelines, grasslands and forests. Assist in organizing field equipment and managing interns.
  • Conduct vegetation monitoring, including plant identification and above- and belowground sample collection, in restored and existing ecosystems. Collect soil/sediment samples and conduct basic soil analysis.
  • Conduct water quality, fish and shellfish, benthic and other aquatic species monitoring, independently or with community partners and volunteers.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret data and present results.
  • Use ArcGIS software to map, visualize and spatially analyze data.
  • Prepare wetland and stormwater permit applications for state and federal regulatory agencies, and complete wetland delineations and other field work in support of permit applications.
  • Prepare maps, figures and final reports to submit to the public, funders, collaborators, internal staff and regulatory agencies.
  • Support senior staff in evaluating the effects of restoration and adaptive management actions on natural resources.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Under the Civil Service Title: Community Coordinator; Job ID#: 285711   
 
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
OR
 
Under the Civil Service Title: City Research Scientist; Job ID#: 285708
 
1.    A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
 
Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates.
 
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Master’s degree in an environmental science, ecology, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to work in a team.
  • Field experience conducting hydrologic or ecological monitoring.
  • Knowledge of NYC flora and fauna, erosion control and stormwater pollution prevention techniques.
  • Experience conducting field mapping and monitoring.
  • Experience preparing permit applications, conducting associated monitoring and preparing reports for regulatory compliance.
  • Strong GIS, spatial and statistical analysis and data management skills.
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating construction plans and specifications for the purpose of developing monitoring reports.
  • In depth understanding of wetlands and stormwater regulations.
  • Valid New York State diver license.
 
Salary: $59,000 - $65,000 plus excellent benefits
