DU has been using advanced GIS and remote sensing technologies since 1984 to manage the complex issues in wetland and waterfowl management, land-use planning, and environmental conservation. This GIS Intern position will be based in our Western Regional Office in Rancho Cordova, CA (Sacramento Area), and requires GIS experience with ESRI products and a background in natural resources, wildlife and wetlands. Responsibilities: The intern will work with a team of GIS professionals to update the National Wetlands Inventory in the western US. Other responsibilities may include GIS analysis to support Ducks Unlimited’s conservation efforts, supporting project biologists and engineers with mapping needs, and setting up and maintaining GIS systems. Applicants should have experience with GIS data development, on-screen digitizing, photo interpretation and preferably some experience with wetland identification and classification. The intern will gain experience in wetlands mapping, photo/image interpretation, GIS data development, field data collection, image processing and segmentation, ArcGIS Online, information technology and hardware/software support. Qualifications: Candidates must have at minimum, a B.S. in a natural resources field of study and experience using ESRI software products. Experience in wildlife management, ecology, and wetlands is preferred. The qualified applicant will be a self-motivated, conscientious individual who can work independently with minimal supervision as well as communicate closely with Ducks Unlimited biologists and engineers. Acts as a lead worker, directing the work of GIS Analysts 1 and 2 in GIS Analysis, developing and programming. Works under administrative direction. Works on routine and advanced GIS Analysis, programs and systems; works as a project leader and mentor. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This classification series includes GIS Analyst 1, 2, and 3. Develop routines to produce standard or ad hoc map products for internal personnel. Analyze and fulfill map products requests from external parties. System & Data Administration Support GIS data acquisition and loading into the system. Develop or acquire routines to convert GIS data formats. Oversee GIS land base maintenance when necessary. Troubleshoot data related problems. Provide electronic GIS map data for regional agency as necessary.
