Forestry Officer (GIS and Remote Sensing), FAO, P3

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the overall administrative and managerial supervision of the Senior Forestry Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of components of the FRA (Global Forest Assessment (GFA) 2015 process. In particular, the incumbent will:
  • provide technical support to member countries in the implementation, analysis and updating of forest resource information based on remote sensing for the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA);
  • run routines based on the GDAL library and Trimble eCognition software to process satellite imagery into land cover and land use classes;
  • prepare training datasets for countries including technical presentations, satellite data, and adapted exercises;
  • conduct technical capacity building workshops aiming at producing results adapted to the FRA 2015 reporting process;
  • generate reliable statistics for the FRA 2015 report;
  • perform any other duty as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
  • Advanced University degree in forestry or related field
  • Five years of relevant experience related to forest resource assessment, geographic information systems, remote sensing and
    capacity building
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
  • Knowledge of the FAO Global Forest Resource Assessment programme
  • Extent of experience in the implementation of technical training workshops in developing countries
  • Technical skills in GIS, data management, remote sensing
  • Ability to work as an effective team member
  • Good communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to deliver results within deadlines
    Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments
