GIS Analyst w/ WWF

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a GIS Analyst. Under the supervision of the Director of Information Science, the GIS Analyst will provide spatial analysis support to the WWF conservation programs and other departments, manage GIS assets including GIS hardware, software and data systems; provide cartographic services and GIS support to WWF-US departments; and liaise with similar functions across the WWF Network. Emphasis of this position is on delivering service that is reliable, responsive and efficient

Major Duties & Responsibilities

1. Contribute GIS analysis and cartography expertise to select conservation projects. Participate as a team member for projects that require spatial analysis and GIS expertise. Share experience, advice, lessons learned and ideas with colleagues who are using GIS tools or conducting GIS analyses of their own in order to stay current with skills and applications. Provide overall GIS support and advice to WWF-US department. Support the Director of Information Science in developing and implementing the GIS strategy.
2. Manage and maintain GIS data resources and web tools. Prioritize and curate spatial datasets and web applications to be maintained by WWF-US. Maintain links for accessing relevant datasets curated by others in the WWF Network or other institutions. Develop plans for transitioning datasets and web applications that are better maintained by others.
3. Manage and maintain GIS software resources including ESRI ArcGIS, Google Earth, and other software products. Manage relationships with vendors to secure and renew licensing agreements (including participation in ESRI User Conference). Manage an efficient internal process for distributing licenses to WWF-US and Network staff. Provide technical support for installation and upgrades.
4. Manage and maintain GIS hardware resources including servers, plotters, workstations and laptops. Coordinate with IT to ensure reliable operation of development and production servers. Advise IT about GIS-related hardware requirements when procuring new computers. Coordinate maintenance of shared resources like plotters and GIS laptops.
5. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

1. Education/Experience: 
   • The position requires a Bachelor’s degree + at least 4yrs of experience in GIS data management and analysis.  A Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of work experience.  Degrees in related field such as such as Geography, natural resources management, or Ecology are preferred. 
   • Knowledge of biodiversity conservation, or natural resources management as well as an understanding of international conservation issues is required.
2. Skills and Abilities
   • Extensive demonstrable technical knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS - in particular ESRI products), and methods for manipulating, processing and analyzing spatial data.  Experience applying GIS and spatial analyses to conservation. Knowledge of ESRI products, licensing and user support required.
   • Working familiarity with other spatial applications such as Google Earth. Knowledge of server GIS and web mapping is strongly desired.
   • Technical proficiency with computer systems; knowledge of relational databases; information management skills and experience with GIS-associated tasks and analysis.  Basic knowledge of computer hardware.
   • Knowledge of conservation science at least to a level of communicating effectively with scientists and other staff; ideally to be able to effectively participate in conservation projects.
   • Basic knowledge of programming for automating GIS analysis and database management. Ability to program in python and to maintain web pages is desirable.
   • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface between WWF staff, decision makers, and the ability to provide clear and patient instruction.
   • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.  Able to work to and meet deadlines.
   • Strong communications skills, verbal and written.  This position involves working with a wide range of people in WWF, including technical and non-technical colleagues. Candidate must have ability to write clear and concise reports.
   • Able to take direction and then work independently to deliver.
