Applied Archaeological Research, Inc. (AAR), is seeking to hire a GIS Specialist. Founded in 1996, AAR is
a multi-disciplinary cultural resource consulting firm based in Portland, Oregon. AAR has six full-time and two part-time staff members and is mid-size among local Cultural Resource Management firms. AAR specializes in the archaeology of Pacific Northwest and adjoining regions and has successfully completed over 2,300 projects that have ranged from small-scale surveys to large, complex, multi-site testing and data recovery projects. Job Description GIS Specialist is a professional position requiring advanced knowledge and a varied skill set in GIS principals, cartography, and database management. GIS Specialists download the GPS data, create shapefiles and databases, and use graphic software packages (e.g. Adobe Illustrator) to create maps and report graphics. They will assist in preparing technical reports. They will perform GIS tasks with very limited supervision.
Required Qualifications Applicants must have a GIS certificate or 3+ years of experience with ESRI ArcGIS. They will perform data downloads from GPS units, data conversion, digitizing, spatial data editing, and perform data validation. Additionally, they should have experience in database design and general technical support. They should be familiar with Adobe Illustrator, Access databases, Excel, or comparable software applications. This person will be first level support for technical questions and should have a familiarity with computers and skills in resolving application questions. They will be responsible for installing and coordinating software upgrades. There is quite a bit of opportunity to work into a full time position, if the applicant has experience with archaeology, geoarchaeology, soil science, geomorphology, proofreading reports, and general business operations, such as accounting.
