This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. The Nature Conservancy offers GLOBE internships in the following areas: Conservation/Environmental Studies, Science, Information Technology (Computer Science), Marketing/Business, Marketing (Photo editing/Production Assistant), Communications, MBA Finance, Policy, Government Relations, Audit, and Philanthropy. TNC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The GIS/Field Technician Globe Intern will assist the GIS Specialist and must be able to navigate using a GPS, download, post-process and edit GIS files. The GIS/Field Technician Globe Intern will use ESRI ArcGIS 10 and be familiar with data entry into a geo-database, making maps and reports and imagery analysis. The GIS/Field Technician Globe Intern position requires an enthusiastic, motivated, action-oriented person with experience in natural resources management field operations in potentially hazardous conditions. These operations include surveying, mapping, monitoring and controlling alien species and their impacts to native forests. The GIS/Field Technician Globe Intern must be willing to camp in remote mountainous areas and operate in extremely rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions. Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury as well as helicopter operations so a commitment to safety is essential. Other activities include vehicle, equipment and facilities maintenance and outreach. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS * Student or recent graduate that studied or is studying biology, environmental studies and or computer science, GIS or a related field. * Knowledge of or ability to learn Hawaiian biota, Hawaiian conservation biology, native and alien plant and animal identification skills. * Experience with weed and ungulate control techniques. * Experience with field and helicopter operations. * Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), field mapping techniques and monitoring & compiling data **PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:** * Working knowledge of Hawaiian biota, Hawaiian conservation biology, native Hawaiian and alien plant and animal identification skills. * Experience using Windows-based personal computers and ability to use various software programs including Word, Excel, Access, or other compatible software. * Experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS)(ESRI ArcGIS), and field mapping techniques. * Experience with ungulate and weed control techniques used in Hawaii. * Experience building and maintaining game fences in rough, uneven terrain. * Experience with map reading and orienteering. Must be able to navigate extremely rugged terrain using maps, compass, and GPS. * Ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment, including power and construction tools. * Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as Wilderness First Aid/CPR, helicopter safety and sling load training, Hawaii State hunting license, rappelling, and Restricted Use Pesticide Applicator license. * Possession of a current and valid drivers license. * Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather. ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION * This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 - August 8, 2014. **AUTO SAFETY POLICY** This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record. **WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT** * Ability to perform physical work, camp and work in remote rugged areas, sometimes under adverse weather conditions or in inclement weather for up to a week at a time. * Willingness and ability to hike up to 12 miles over steep rugged terrain, carrying 60lb packs. * Work requires extreme physical exertion and/or physical strain to the point of physical fatigue. * Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury.
