Network GIS Assistant w/ City of Seattle (WA)

Position Description
​Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. 
 
GIS (Geographic Information System) has become a core data and applications set for the Utility, essential to many business units in the execution of their work. This position is an entry-level member of the GIS Mapping group, part of the Utility Technology Division at Seattle City Light.  This position is responsible for preparing, maintaining and revising GIS information, maps and viewers for internal and external customers of Seattle City Light. This position will report to the Network GIS Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities
Here is more about what you’ll be doing: 
  • Fulfill simple map and data requests using GIS software (ArcGIS, AutoCAD Map).
  • Support internal customer business processes leveraging GIS.
  • Perform scheduled map and GIS data update processes.
  • Perform maintenance work in the production GIS systems as required.
  • Use strong attention to detail and accuracy of mapping assets and electrical data.
  • Exhibit professional behavior in interactions with other City employees and the public.
  • Work as a team member to maintain a respectful, courteous work environment.
  • Plan and coordinate tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: 
Requires an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or two years college coursework in electrical engineering (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Certification/License: Driver’s license or equivalent mobility.
 
Work Environment: Most work is performed in a city office environment. Field visits may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, construction sites, hazardous/toxic substances, and energized high voltage equipment.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS.
  • One or more years of GIS related work within a utility setting using ArcGIS and/or AutoCAD Map.
  • One or more years of electrical drafting or knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience providing custom data and mapping support.
  • Experience gathering business needs for customers unfamiliar with GIS concepts.
