Job Title: Coos Estuary Inventory Project GIS Technician

Agency: Department of State Lands – South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve

Salary: $19.72/hr
Other Benefits: None
Position Duration: Half-Time/~8 months
Job Location: Charleston, OR (near Coos Bay, OR on the south-central Oregon coast)

Job Summary: 
The purpose of this position is to support the development of the Coos Estuary Inventory Project, which includes status and trends assessments of environmental and socioeconomic conditions in the Coos estuary and associated sub-basins.

Responsibilities:
  • Using ArcGIS/ArcMap, design and create easily readable, web-suitable  maps that indicate the location and spatial extent of specific environmental and socio-economic attributes in the Coos estuary (e.g., eelgrass beds, clam and cockle beds, demographic information)
  • Help develop a web-based user interface with an interactive map that allows access to inventory data tables and data summaries, and conversely allows access to maps from inventory data tables and data summaries
  • Convert spatial data formatted in MS Access or MS Excel into ArcGIS databases
  • Link spatial and non-spatial tables in GIS in order to help inform status and trends analyses
  • Run queries in ArcMap to retrieve specific biological and socio-economic information from geospatial databases
  • Determine and document the suitability of geospatial data for use in status and trends analyses
  • Use spatial statistical analyses to interpret status and trends information
  • Summarize GIS analyses methods and results 
  • Analyze environmental and socio-economic status and trends information using MS Excel, MS Access, or other statistics programs (e.g. Sigma Plot). 
  • Using MS Excel, develop data summaries in table and graph formats of environmental and socio-economic status and trends information
  • Work with University of Oregon scientists to format the user interface for the hydrodynamic model of the Coos estuary they’re developing
  • Review map and data products with SSNERR staff/UO scientists for accuracy, appropriate design/format and functionality
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff
  • Communicate effectively with local community members participating in the project through the Coos Estuary Inventory Project subcommittee
  • Help organize and manage both project-specific and organization-wide geospatial data 

Desired Qualifications:
  • Highly proficient in ArcGIS
  • Highly proficient in MS Excel for data management, summarization, creating graphs, and basic summary statistics 
  • Familiarity with other database, statistics and graphing programs (e.g. MS Access,SigmaPlot) for querying, manipulating and analyzing data 
  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in natural resource sciences and GIS; or Associates plus 1 year experience using GIS skills in natural resources field
  • Data management skills
