Position Type:

Position Title:
Renewable Energy Facility GIS Mapping Internship

Job Description:
Are you interested in using a geographic information system (GIS) to create maps? Do you enjoy working with data and looking for ways to use data to tell a story? Are you interested in renewable electricity and how Oregon resources are helping the state achieve its renewable energy goals? If this sounds like you, put your education and interest to use at the Oregon Department of Energy!

ODOE's College Internship Program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience working in a state agency. Our agency focuses on a sustainable energy future – from renewables to resiliency to cutting-edge innovations. We are now accepting internship applications from students in accredited degree programs who have completed at least their freshman year in an Associate or Bachelor's degree program, as well as students enrolled in graduate school.

Working at ODOE
At the Oregon Department of Energy, we're driven by our mission to lead Oregon to a safe, equitable, clean, and sustainable future. We take this responsibility seriously, with a commitment to challenging work that makes a difference in the lives of Oregonians. We're looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about making change through public service. We want people who get excited about new ideas, seeing projects through, and being part of a team. With about a hundred staff, our agency is made better through strong collaboration and communication. We recognize each other's talents, respect each other's diversity, and count on each other's word. Above all, we have fun working together on behalf of the state. Energy is one of the most important, fastest-moving issues in Oregon today. Come join our team and work on dynamic issues that affect current and future generations of Oregonians.

Working for the Energy Planning and Innovation Division
The Energy Planning and Innovation Division prioritizes diversifying Oregon's energy mix, successfully integrating renewable energy resources into our energy systems, developing innovative approaches to saving energy, better managing our use of energy, and supporting statewide efforts to meet Oregon's future energy and climate goals. Through statewide programs and projects, the division provides policy expertise and leadership on topics such as renewable and conventional energy resources, alternative fuel vehicles, demand response, energy storage, energy efficiency, and energy system resiliency. The team supports promising initiatives to advance energy innovation – from providing grants to energy technology demonstration projects, to developing energy policy recommendations, to providing technical expertise on emerging energy issues. In 1999, we were the first state in the nation to adopt carbon dioxide emission standards. Today, the division plays a key role in informing greenhouse gas policy discussions and developing options to meet both the state's energy needs and climate goals.

This is a part-time internship opportunity, located in Salem Oregon. We anticipate up to 20 hours per week, allowing for flexibility with school schedules.

Duties & Responsibilities
This position will create a map of Oregon's renewable energy facilities in Oregon by actual land use acreage. The map will be created by reviewing Oregon energy facilities using Google maps and using the information to add create coordinates in a GIS system that will be used to create the actual map. The position will collect this information, develop a GIS map of the coordinate data, and coordinate with Oregon Department of Energy staff to develop a final published product for the agency’s website.

The most successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in working with Google Maps to collect coordinate information.
