Storm Water/Parks GIS Intern (Maple Valley, WA)

​The City of Maple Valley Finance/IT Department seeks to hire a full-time, Temporary (Approximately 4 months) Storm Water/Parks GIS Intern.

The GIS Intern will perform field collection, mapping, and data validation work for the City’s Storm Water Management (SWM) System and Parks Department.  This position will identify SWM and Parks assets in the field using GPS equipment (and/or mobile applications) and collect and/or update missing attribute data into the City’s enterprise GIS system under the supervision and guidance of the City’s GIS Manager.

In addition to other job responsibilities, this position will:

• Identify, collect, and update attributes and locations of asset’s into the City’s enterprise GIS in the field and the office
• Use mobile data collect equipment (GPS and/or Trimble GPS) to collect field data and attributes
• Perform field and or document research to verify and correct existing SWM and or Parks GIS features
• View and relate plans, as-builts, etc. to GIS assets and update attributes accordingly
• Create, update, and edit features in a geodatabase

• How to interpret construction plans, drawings, and legal descriptions
• Use spatial databases to organize, process, and analyze data
• Demonstrated experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop (v.10.x)
• Willingness to learn new GIS technologies including ArcGIS Server/Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, and Portal for ArcGIS
• Cartographic principles and GIS concepts
• Spatial database principles, geodatabase construction, and data formats
• GNSS/GPS systems and principles
• Technical problem solving skills
• Perform research and assist in spatial analysis and evaluation of GIS data
• Accurately enter attribute information into spatial features using ArcGIS Desktop (v.10.x) or ArcGIS Pro (v.2.x)
• Begin and complete a variety of GIS projects
• Verify, edit and update GIS spatial databases
• Develop map and graphic products
• Minimum one year of college level courses or technical training in GIS or related field, or any combination of experience, education and training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities required
• Experience using ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop (v.10.x) and or ArcGIS Pro (v.2.x)
• Experience with GIS data collection using field data collection apps such as Collector for ArcGIS and or Trimble GPS units
• Excel software experience preferred

This is a full-time, temporary position expected to last no longer than 5 months, Salary Range: $19.00/hr. – $23.00/hr. DOE.  There are no benefits associated with this position
