Temporary Assistant Planner w/ City of Lake Oswego

The City of Lake Oswego is searching for a planning professional to assist the City’s Natural Resources Planner with a variety of current and long range planning projects. This position will help implement revisions to the City’s natural resource protection program, coordinate urban and community forestry programs, and perform environmental education and outreach. This is a temporary position that will work an average of 20 hours a week. Expected duration of the position is through June 30, 2014.

 Key Responsibilities:

1. Research how other local governments in the Metro region comply with Title 3 and 13 requirements.
2. Help develop and refine the proposed revisions to the City’s natural resource protection program, including code amendments and potential creation of new acquisition and restoration programs
3. Assist with natural resource evaluations and determine whether existing Sensitive Lands overlay districts can be removed.
4. Plan and coordinate urban and community forestry events, which may include the City’s annual Arbor Week celebration and a tree management workshop series.
5. Create web content and write newsletter articles about natural resource-related projects, programs, and events.
6. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Priority consideration is given to applicants with:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or similar degree, and one year related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the functions described above.
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning and natural resource planning and protection. Knowledge of Metro Functional Plan Titles 3 and 13 and Oregon Statewide Planning Goal 5 is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to read and interpret complex rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of and prior experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and GIS software programs. 
• Ability to effectively meet and communicate with the public, handle stressful situations, and work cooperatively with other employees.
