Job Summary:

The Landscape Ecology Team (LET) at NMFS’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center is a team of ecologists and geographers working to elucidate the linkages between habitat and anadromous fish that spawn in California. Our approach to this uses principles and methods from landscape, ecosystem, community, and population ecology. The Geographic Information System (GIS) / Remote Sensing Analyst will support spatial data management, data analysis, and field data collection.

The selected candidate will assemble, analyze, synthesize, and support spatially explicit modeling of diverse data sets in support of basic and applied research on the ecology of anadromous fish.

Qualifications:

- Experience and/or knowledge such as attained through upper division coursework leading to Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Computer Science or combination of education and experience.

- Strong familiarity and experience with use of ArcGIS, MATLAB, and database management.

- Strong scripting skills, e.g. AML, VBA, Python, IDL; strong cartographic skills; working familiarity with vector GIS (networks, dynamic segmentation).

- Experience working with hydrologic datasets.

- Knowledge of ecology, habitat and conservation issues, especially (but not necessarily) those related to anadromous fish.

- Experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, including Excel and Power Point.

- Experience in compilation, preparation and analysis of charts, graphs and\or models involving experimental data.

- Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.

- Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Good organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to learn and apply a variety of policies and procedures.

- Ability to work accurately, with interruptions, to meet deadlines.

- Ability to work independently, and as part of a team.

- Demonstrated ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion.

Position Description:
MFA is actively seeking a full-time GIS technician/analyst for our Portland, Oregon, office. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing GIS technical support and GIS task
management for environmental, engineering, and planning projects. Primary duties include assisting with day-to-day GIS project tasks for company projects, including GIS data management, collecting, analyzing, and mapping geographic data, and creating cartographic products for display and reports.
 
To Qualify:
Minimum Requirements
 -BA/BS degree from a U.S. accredited college or university in geography, planning,
environmental studies/science, or related field. A minimum of 12 credit hours in GIS-
specific courses is also required. Please provide a list of completed GIS coursework.
 -Up to five years of experience in consulting or related field. Recent graduates are encouraged
to apply.  
 -Competence in working with ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop suite (ArcMap, ArcCatalog,
ArcToolbox) and extensions (i.e., Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst).
-Ability to perform GIS data conversion/editing, spatial analysis/reporting tasks, spatial database management, and GIS map production.  
 -Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.
 -Proven organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail.
 -Must be able to formulate and clearly communicate ideas, both verbally and in writing.
 -Ability to work both independently with little guidance and within a collaborative group
environment.
 -Willingness to work overtime as needed.
 
Desired Skills and Abilities
 -Knowledge of additional ESRI extensions (e.g., Network Analyst, Business Analyst,
Geostatistical Analyst).
-Experience in working with ESRI’s ArcGIS Server products or experience with other
applicable Web design products.  
 -Proficiency in Adobe Design suite of products and the ability to integrate them with ESRI.
 -Advanced cartographic skills and/or experience in graphic illustration.
 -Experience working with AutoCAD data within the ArcGIS Desktop environment.
 -3D modeling experience. Include a description of the programs used (e.g., Sketchup,
LightWave) and the types of products created.
 -Experience or interest in programming (e.g., java, VBA, ArcObjects, python, flex).
 -Experience in database management systems (e.g., SQL).

River-in-Focus: The Willamette River Transit Bridge – the first bridge built over the Willamette River in over 35 years.
 
Dave Unsworth, TriMet’s Deputy Project Manager for the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project, will describe the first transit-only bridge in the United States to be built here in Portland between the Marquam and the Ross Island bridges. This cable-stayed bridge will be host to light rail, bus, future Streetcar, cyclists and pedestrians, but no private vehicles. Dave will describe the features of the bridge, the multiple layers of environmental hurdles and permitting needed to undertake such a project, and the basic construction plan to erect this structure.
