Located in the Law Enforcement Technology Unit, this position will provide a myriad of programming, database, GIS, and web development services and perform needs assessments, statistical and feasibility studies, address planning issues, and assist with research and other data driven projects in a networked environment. Successful candidates will possess Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, or related field. Progressively responsible programming and systems analysis experience. Prefer experience with databases, GIS mapping applications, SQL, Solr, Java, Flex/Flash, Coldfusion, other web development, or programming experience. Description:
Assist with research evaluating the effect of hydropower operation on fish and wildlife habitat quality within large river ecosystems, evaluations of stream habitat restoration, and research evaluating novel bioremediation technologies to remediate contaminated aquifers.  Responsibilities will include assisting project managers and other staff in the field and in the lab using instruments to monitor water quality and habitat condition. Candidate will also assist with data processing and preliminary analysis. Candidate will help write sections of reports.  Opportunities may also arise to work with other ongoing projects at PNNL including field research related to fish survival through the Columbia River hydropower system. jobs.pnl.gov.

December 17, 2009 (Des Plaines, IL) - Ten years after announcing that electronic copies of the URISA Journal would be made freely available to teachers and learners everywhere via the World Wide Web, the Journal’s electronic archives have become one of the richest collections of open educational resources in the geospatial field.

As of December 2009 there are 196 peer-reviewed articles in 40 issues of the URISA Journal freely available at http://www.urisa.org/journal_archives.

The Journal is one of only three journals listed by the Directory of Open Access Journals (http://www.doaj.org) under the keyword “gis,” and it is the only one to be ranked among 46 leading geographic information science (GIScience) journals by Caron and colleagues in 2008.

Caron and colleagues’ combined a Delphi study of 40 international experts and a quantitative comparison of journal citation rates to identify and rank leading periodicals in the GIScience field.

They ranked the URISA Journal 14th in relative importance among 46 periodicals. According to president Kathrine Cargo, “the sustained quality of the URISA Journal confirms the quality of our authors’ research, the dedication and skill of our editorial team, and the viability of open access publishing. URISA is proud to contribute these valuable resources to the benefit of the geospatial enterprise worldwide.”  

In 1998-99 Harlan Onsrud offered to serve as editor on the condition that the URISA Board of Directors agreed to publish open-access version the journal. Onsrud was concerned about escalating costs of academic journal subscriptions, and about scholars’ responsibility to “maximize dissemination of our works and our readership.” At the time, URISA President Joseph Ferreira stated that “while commercial publishers best make progress through exclusivity and control, the URISA Journal editors believe that science and new knowledge is best advanced through an intellectual environment of openness and freedom” (URISA 1999)

The Uncompahgre Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management is offering a Term GIS position. This position will support the revision of the Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement as well as other tasks.

Looking for a GIS Specialist here in Volcano Hawaii. It's open on
www.usajobs.gov from 12/4 - 12/17, search for FS-294609-KB-10. It's a permanent position that will be hired at the GS-9 or GS-11 level based on qualifications. The salary on the USAJOBS website does not include our Hawaii COLA and the 2010 phase in of locality pay so the salary  will start around $50,000 at a GS-9 level and about $60,000 at the GS-11 level (probable hiring level for qualified candidates).

WWF’s Conservation Science Program is looking for an intern to assist with preparation and testing of InVEST, a suite of models for ecosystem services mapping built by the Natural Capital Project (http://www.naturalcapitalproject.org). The work will involve a)building and reviewing python code for various models b) testing models c) optimizing models for speed and efficiency d) preparing data and running models for a selected landscape.  The intern will have opportunities to interact with NatCap ecosystem services modeling experts and to gain valuable experience with one of the largest international conservation organizations. We look for a motivated intern for 3 -6 months, ideally with a background in conservation and solid knowledge of ArcGIS geoprocessing and python coding.
