​Position Summary
The Assistant GIS Specialist performs a variety of entry-level, professional GIS tasks associated with the development, maintenance and distribution of Metro's Regional Land Information System (RLIS), as well as project-specific data compilation, research, analysis and visualization. The position will focus on providing support to Research Center staff, Metro departments, other jurisdictions and the general public with GIS products, analysis and research. This position reports to the Research Center Client Services manager.

Essential Job Duties
An employee in this position must be able to perform all the essential job duties listed below with or without reasonable accommodation; however, this list is not intended to include all of the specific tasks which an employee in this position may be expected to perform.
  • Produce standard and custom maps and reports for Metro staff, partner agencies, and the public in a high-volume, team-oriented production environment.
  • Compile, inventory, organize, develop, and document quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources.
  • Utilize Esri software to develop, edit, analyze and publish Metro's region-wide database (RLIS).
  • Assist in researching methodologies and data sources and compiling data for mapping and analysis.
  • Provide back-up assistance to other staff who supply maps, aerial photography and computer mapping services.
  • Effectively collaborate with other agency staff on projects.
  • Use a variety of techniques to visualize technical data and analysis results.
  • Update metadata, document procedures, and follow quality control routines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position is represented by AFSCME Local 3580 and is classified as an Assistant GIS Specialist (click to read the full classification). Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.


Minimum Requirements
A bachelor's degree in geography, computer science, urban planning or a related field, with major course work in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and one year of work experience in GIS and computer experience; or any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

Preferred:
  • Experience working in a versioned SDE (spatial database engine) environment.
  • Experience analyzing data with an equity perspective (e.g., racial/ethnic demographic population segments).
  • Experience coding in Python or R.
  • Experience with machine learning or other "big data" analytics.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Demonstrated experience using Esri software
  • Demonstrated experience producing visualizations of complicated data/information.
  • Working knowledge of cartographic practices, geographic principles, and mapping terms.
  • Experience with compiling and normalizing data from varied sources.
  • Familiarity with the structure and querying relational databases.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics including statistics and quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Familiarity with basic project management practices will be given preference.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in an active environment and balance multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a varied clientele.
