Job Description
Lynker Technologies, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a data specialist located in the Pacific Northwest (which includes, but is not limited to OR, WA, AK, HI). The candidate selected for this position will assist in analyzing large and complex datasets relating to marine-based endangered species and communicating the results through reports, interactive online maps and charts, infographics, and other novel and creative media. The specialist will work with a variety of data, including on US endangered species recovery and permitting, voluntary conservation initiatives, climate change impacts on marine and other wildlife; ecological status of federal and state fisheries, coral reefs, estuaries, rivers, and other water habitats; and funding patterns for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service. The specialist will also work with remotely sensed data, including satellite images, to better understand how land use decisions are affecting endangered species.
 
The specialist must be an ambitious, entrepreneurial, and creative self-starter driven by the opportunity to use empirical research to make smarter decisions about wildlife conservation and passionate about communicating the results to expert and lay audiences. Minimum qualifications include working knowledge of quantitative methods, GIS, and database construction and management, as well as the ability to use JavaScript and APIs to create custom features using Google Geo or other similar web-map and information design products. Background in wildlife policy and science is preferred but not mandatory.
 
Job Responsibilities
  • Manage data relating to wildlife and their habitats, and organize data into format that is easily accessible for analysis.
  • Use quantitative and computational methods to analyze data, including data modeling and analysis to identify patterns. Using data mining to identify relevant information from large datasets.
  • Communicate results in a variety of traditional and emerging formats, including interactive online maps, infographics, dynamic charts, and written narratives. The specialist will be responsible for generating these products using Google Geo products, Esri products, dynamic programming languages, and other methods.
  • Help advocate for improvements to wildlife conservation using the work products. Ability to present results clearly and effectively in written and verbal formats is essential.
  • Produce static and dynamic maps for a variety of Defenders’ conservation initiatives.
  • Develop initiatives to use internet crowdsourcing to help monitoring and evaluate the condition of wildlife and their habitats.
  • Work closely with Lynker managers and office director to promote our company’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.

Job Qualifications

Education and Years of Experience:
Advanced degree in data or applied computational sciences or comparable discipline. A bachelor’s (BA or BS) degree in a quantitative or computational discipline, combined with significant relevant work experience, may substitute for an advanced degree.
In addition to the educational requirements, the position requires at least three years of relevant work experience, including managing, analyzing, and communicating the results of large datasets.
 
Technical skills:
  • Expertise with assembling, managing, and analyzing large datasets using quantitative methods and tools. Working knowledge of data management techniques and statistical methods is essential.
  • Familiarity with emerging techniques and practices in managing big data.
  • Expertise with GIS including experience with ArcGIS.
  • Working knowledge of Google analytical and communication tools, primarily Maps Engine API, Earth, Earth Engine, Charts, and Fusion Tables. Ability to integrate these tools and code custom features using JavaScript.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and KML.
  • Knowledge of Tableau, Infogr.am, and other data visualization tools strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of how people perceive and interpret information, particularly on the Internet. Basic understanding of visual arts.
