The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is hiring a Geospatial Associate, as a new, two-year term, position. The Geospatial Associate will focus on geospatial data management, research and analysis. SELC’s geospatial team is part of the Program Communications Team, and additionally provides geographic research and mapping support to law and policy teams throughout the organization. We are seeking someone with strong geospatial and cartographic skills and familiarity with environmental law and policy, conservation strategies, and environmental science. The work is fast-paced and deadline-driven, and each day will be a little different. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the most effective environmental nonprofits in the United States—and to use your geospatial, analytical, and creative skills to help SELC’s efforts to protect the environment of our special region.

Job Duties:
  • Work on a daily basis with SELC’s talented team of law and policy experts and communications managers to investigate emerging and lingering environmental concerns;
  • Combine knowledge of geography, environmental law and policy, and natural sciences to design and implement GIS-based solutions to environmental problems;
  • Manage, store and retrieve spatial and non-spatial data;
  • Post-process spatial data, including quality control, building metadata, and carrying out data conversions;
  • Update and track the internal content management system and support all team members in archiving project-related documents and data effectively;
  • Provide support with generating maps, posters and other visually compelling displays for print and web-based mapping applications; and
  • Coordinate with partner groups, data providers, and environmental agencies, and play a key role in all aspects of geospatial projects.

Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in geography or related environmental field with experience in geospatial technologies, cartography, and environmental issues;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to skillfully manage complex projects, juggle multiple priorities, and find creative solutions to problems;
  • Ability to work well with people of varied personalities and work styles, take feedback constructively, and engage happily in a back-and-forth collaborative process to arrive at the best final product;
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS for Desktop, MS Office Suite;
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Python; Google Earth Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, d3), spatially enabled databases (e.g.,  PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Microsoft SQL Server), JavaScript;
  • Strong interest in environmental issues; and
  • Ability to travel about once a month.

If you are interested and have these qualifications, please submit an application showcasing your ability and potential as a Geospatial Associate that can provide impactful work to our organization's mission.  A complete application needs to include a cover letter, resume, and work portfolio (link to an online geospatial portfolio preferred)--to GISjob@selcnc.org. Or mail a submission package to SELC Geospatial Associate Hire, 601 West Rosemary Street, Suite 220, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Application deadline is June 10, 2018.

SELC is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strongly encourages applications from persons of all backgrounds.

Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $45,000-$50,000 per year and includes an excellent benefits package.

Duration:

Two years

About SELC:

We seek to bring these same values to our partnerships with other organizations, communities, and people of all backgrounds who share our mission. The South has a rich natural diversity and an equally rich cultural diversity. SELC is committed to broadening the diversity of its staff in order to strengthen our organization and its effectiveness in responding to the many environmental challenges affecting the South and its people.
With nine offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Birmingham, AL; Nashville, TN; Asheville, NC; and Richmond, VA), SELC is widely recognized as the Southeast's foremost environmental organization and regional leader. SELC works on a full range of environmental issues to protect the South's natural resources and the health and well-being of its people. Although its regional focus is the Southeast, much of its work is national in scope and impact.
