ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The USF Libraries Digital Heritage & Humanities Collections (DHHC) initiative documents heritage sites, landscapes, and objects, and creates digital learning tools and collections that promote sustainable heritage tourism and interpretation strategies through the use 3D and imaging technologies. We work interdisciplinary with academic units, researchers, and students to provide technologies and teaching tools relating to 3D, including demonstrating the value for using our unique collections relating to our heritage research broadly into curriculum. Our research platform is heritage preservation, and our projects and collections are chosen to solve real world, global problems and build on research and outreach strengths for USF. Our mission revolves around creating important scholarship and research collections; creating teaching, mentoring, and curricular opportunities relating to 3D and imaging technologies; supporting and creating opportunities for faculty and student research with 3D and imaging tools, building capacities and strategic partnerships to increase digital collections; and developing world class research and digital strategies for heritage collections.


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the GIS Project Manager, this position designs, develops, customizes, and maintains GIS systems and collections for the USF Tampa Library. Typical duties include digital data conversion, gathering map feature and attribute data, quality control, and database construction in the course of creating GIS-based research collections. The nature of the work often requires close collaboration with students, faculty, GIS specialists, programmers, systems administrators, and librarians and may include contact with potential donors. Problems encountered range from routine to highly complex.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Analyze, design, and maintain GIS systems and collections for the USF Tampa library. Create and manage geodatabases hosted by the USF Library's Geoportal & Data Repository. Evaluate and revise GIS content, using both formative and summative approaches, utilizing focus groups, interviews, test results, and observation as appropriate to maintain quality control.

Develop spatial visualization strategies for data management clients including students, faculty, and affiliated researchers. Design the content and graphic elements for GIS products and collections. Review design outlines with appropriate faculty and intended audiences.

Create and deliver electronic media, still images, and animation as required for GIS based collections. Develop GIS content to support research and teaching objectives to include theses/dissertations, presentations, and publications.

Collaborate with GIS specialists, programmers, system administrators, and librarians on GIS technology, design, and delivery methods. Work with USF/IT on technical issues and requirements, as needed.

Author and maintain FGDC/ISO compliant metadata for GIS data. Program web map services to present GIS spatial data to the online community.  Integrate web map services and GIS data with Scholar Commons and the library's open-access journals (as required).

Explain the USF Tampa Library's GIS program objectives and collections to potential donors, as requested. Other Duties as assigned.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a discipline that regularly utilizes GIS (e.g. geography, environmental science, marine science, anthropology, etc.) and one year of experience working with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS.

PREFERRED:

A Bachelor's degree and two years of proven GIS work experience is strongly preferred. Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Online and/or ArcGIS Enterprise. Experience with SQL databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.) and writing SQL queries. Experience with georeferencing aerial imagery and historic maps. Experience with Python scripting or other programing languages is strongly desired. Practical experience with projects and/or education in areas including environmental and/or geophysical applications with GIS, forensic and criminal investigations involving GIS, archaeological and heritage applications for GIS, or social/census research with GIS. GIS Professional (GISP) certification and/or other GIS certification, such as Esri Technical certification or ASPRS certification. Familiarity with terrestrial LiDAR and workflows involving the integration of terrestrial LiDAR into GIS. GPS data collection and processing standards and survey methods, including applications with mapping grade and/or RTK GPS. Licensed FAA certification for drones is desirable, as is familiarity with data processing methods using Structure from Motion and photogrammetric applications for drones.
